WATER (2006)

Watch it now!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? It was definitely a positive experience, but a bit on the vague-side when it comes to connecting the theme up with the events of the movie. The plot was fine, but beyond the river flowing by I didn’t get any idea of where the title comes from (yes, water washes away sins, but why didn’t it for these women?). The movie was probably a bit longer than it needed to be, or just slightly less interesting that it should have been, in my opinion. I wasn’t expecting explosions or chase scenes, but something about this movie just felt a little slow.

Technically any good? The story was very interesting and very important. The script was pretty solid as was most of the acting. I wish I could have seen a bit more from the lead child, range-wise, but giving that she wasn’t speaking her native language, I have to say she did a good job. The rest of the casting was generally spot-on, but the prostitute character was WAY too hot. She did a good job with the acting, but I just didn’t buy that someone that hot and that white-looking would end up in what was essentially a prison for widows (the actress is apparently known as the Angelina Jolie of India!). I had only one other real problem with the movie aside from its pacing and that was a moment where a character behaved in a way that seemed dictated by the plot and not the character. Still, this movie was beautiful and stunning to watch. I just wish the pace was a bit quicker or that there was more to look at while I was waiting for the next plot point to occur.

How did it leave me feeling? Pretty satisfied, over all. I knew nothing about the issue of widows in India or how many are ostracized from society. While the movie takes place during Gandhi’s time, it is apparently still a problem. Seems that humanity, in general, is good at oppressing women–even when the oppressors are women, themselves. Makes no sense.

Final Rating? GSN - Go See Now - India is a fascinating culture and while I wouldn’t rank this film up among my absolute favorites, I think it’s a pretty good movie and a very good introduction to Indian culture (despite it being a negative aspect of Indian culture).

CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920)

by ThePete 12:00 pm 2008-12-11

Buy it on DVD!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? HELL yeah. This is my all time favorite silent movie (though Metropolis is a very close second favorite).

Technically any good? The story follows the events in a small European village after Dr. Caligari and his cabinet arrives. He charges people to see “Cesare the Somnambulist” who spends his entire life sleeping in Caligari’s cabinet to be woken only by the doctor, himself. But when people in the village start dying, who is to blame?

One of the most characteristic things about this movie is how they didn’t try to do anything with lighting–instead, they literally paint the shadows onto the sets. The effect is that the actors literally pop off the screen and the sets look creepy and surreal.

The acting in this 1920 silent film is perfectly reasonable for the time period, though if you’ve never seen a silent before you may have trouble accepting their behavior. The story is wonderful and invented a premise that would be used often in the scifi and horror genres over the following century. So far, I’m not sick of the premise yet.

How did it leave me feeling? Creeped-out, as always. I’ve seen this movie a bunch of times (most recently projected with live music and SFX–the best way to see it!) and it never fails to entertain me. I also see new things I’ve missed before with each viewing.

Final Rating? GSN - Go See Now - if you can find it on the big screen, that’s the best way to really appreciate it, but really it’s good on small screens, too.

HELLBOY 2 (2008)

by ThePete 12:00 pm 2008-12-09

Buy the 3-disc DVD set!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? It was definitely fun, but the bar was set just a bit too high with the first Hellboy movie, sadly, so I found this one to be disappointing.

Technically any good? FX and designs were AMAZING. Visually, this film was STUNNING. Unfortunately, the visuals and FX are the only reasons to see the film beyond some solid acting by the leads. Sadly, the script is cliche, contrived and annoying. There were just too many “that was supposed to be funny?” moments in it. The first Hellboy seemed confident in itself as being a good movie, where this one felt like it was trying hard to prove itself. I should also point out that Selma Blair always falls a little flat for me, but I feel like she just needs a good shove and she’ll be amazing.

How did it leave me feeling? Vaguely entertained, but disappointed. It’s always hard to follow up a good movie with an as-good sequel, but I felt like this script fell into some obvious traps and came off much more cliched than it should have.

Final Rating? NFI - NetFlix It. Don’t spend any money on this one unless it’s your monthly Netflix subscription. :) Though, if you disagree and plan on buying the DVD, please buy Hellboy 2 from my Amazon store so I can get a cut. Thanks! ^_^

GREAT DICTATOR (1940)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? This is a truly impressive film. I had always heard good things about this movie, but the film largely does live up to the hype.

Technically any good? While I’ve never been a fan of comedians speaking gibberish in a way that it both sounds fun and sounds like another language, the film makes up for this in spades. To be honest, I did find myself laughing at the gibber-speak, but still felt like it wouldn’t be done in a comedy, today.

The acting was a solid as you’d expect–that is to say, not great, but perfectly reasonable, for sure. The story is very solid, following a sort of “prince and pauper” vibe as silent movie comic actor/director/auteur Charlie Chaplin plays both the prince (a very Hitler-esque dictator) and the pauper (a Jewish barber). The setup is clearly absurd, but entirely brilliant. This is seriously amazing film making.

How did it leave me feeling? Seriously moved–there’s a wonderful speech at the end that nearly brought tears to my eyes–it was disturbingly resonant in today’s war-filled culture. I could not believe that something from sixty-eight years ago could still be true–and since it’s about war and profit, how depressing is that? VERY.

Good on you, Mr. Chaplin! It’s a shame you’re dead. You’d be wishing you were, anyway. :(

Final Rating? GSN - Go See Now–this is a cinema classic for a reason. It’s also a perfect double feature with To Be Or Not To Be. TheWife and I both agreed that George W. Bush should be forced to listen to Chaplin’s big speech every morning before breakfast.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Without a doubt! This movie was a lot of fun and actually had a interesting dramatic edge that I wasn’t expecting.

Technically any good? Once you accept that Jack Benny and the rest of the cast (including Robert Stack) are actually Polish and not Americans, the film is pretty damn near flawless. There were a couple of contrivances to keep the plot moving, but there are enough genuinely wonderful surprises to keep this movie in the “worth seeing” column for sure. Benny is actually quite good as an actor and not just a very funny man in his role as a “famous” Polish actor. The ending of this film falls a little flat, but for a film made sixty-six years ago, it’s surprisingly solid and even resonant. The dialog is so insanely witty I was floored by some of it.

How did it leave me feeling? Mostly satisfied and the only reason I don’t say “completely” satisfied is because the ending is a little shrug-worthy, but there are some amazingly tense moments in this “comedy” starring one of the biggest comedy greats of all time. See this movie.

Final Rating? GSN - Go See Now–or at least go rent it or Netflix it–or hell, buy it. It’s definitely something you want to watch more than once.

MACROSS II (1992)

by ThePete 1:22 pm 2008-11-21

Every Friday I review the latest anime that I’ve watched recently. This week, it’s Macross II

Click to buy!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Sure, but only in a way that most un-crappy Japanese animation is. Lots of explosions, sexy anime women and transforming robots.

Technically any good? First off, this isn’t a movie. It’s a video series they cut together to make a “movie.” I’m feel lucky they left the Japanese language track on it since I seem to recall too many “movie” versions of anime series being in English only. Speaking of which, the acting is just fine. The animation is more like Macross: Do You Remember Love than the original Macross series, which is a good thing. However, the story is the pits. It’s still got the love triangle that Macross fans love, but the music is kind of peripheral and the alien stuff just feels trite and cliche after watching everything else in the Macross Saga. The action was fun, but if you don’t care whether characters live or die there’s not much excitement in things going boom.

How did it leave me feeling? Disappointed. I just can’t recommend this one. I suppose if you’re a Macross purist you should check it out, if only to know how not good it was. This was the first attempt at a real sequel to the original series and thankfully, later attempts were much more successful at being entertaining.

Final Rating? DNS - Do Not See. Just check out Macross Frontier. Let’s just pretend that’s the final chapter in the saga. ^_^

MURDER BY DEATH (1976)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Wow, not really. I watched this a bunch of times as a little kid and remember loving it but as an adult, it had its moments but was surprisingly unfunny.

Technically any good? It’s a send-up of famous movie detectives and tries to take them to task for their various foibles–whether it’s Charlie Chan’s inability to speak proper English (despite his brilliance) or Miss Marple’s inability to let us in on what she knows before she names the killer (or was it Poirot who did that?). Either way, you can’t fault the acting–well, except for Truman Capote who was amusing, in his own way. The rest of the cast is stunning–David Niven, Peter Sellers, James Cromwell, Maggie Smith, and more, believe it or not (Alex Guiness!!) all did wonderful jobs.

While this movie does have flashes of true inspiration, I have a feeling the script was written at a point in Neil Simon’s life when he was riding off of the success of other projects. The plot feels weakly pulled together and while I get that the ending isn’t supposed to make sense, that doesn’t stop it from being stupid. If you want to make something not make sense in your movie, fine, but you can’t have not make sense inside the universe of the story. The sets looked great, though. :)

How did it leave me feeling? Disappointed. I think I was very easy to please as a kid.

Final Rating? DNS - Do Not See. I’m no fan of Clue but I think I laughed more at that then I did at Murder By Death. Sad to say, I guess.

INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)

by ThePete 2:08 pm 2008-10-30

Click to buy!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Yes! It was a blast, actually.

Technically any good? Personally, I’ve never found the character of the Hulk to be terribly deep, so to me, Ang Lee’s take on him was a waste of time (read my Pocket Review for Lee’s Hulk). He’s not some dark, brooding character, he’s a guy doing his best to stay calm–ALL THE TIME. This movie is all about that struggle and I think it handles it very well, script and story-wise. Acting-wise it’s very spot-on with Edward Norton’s perfect performance as Bruce Banner being the highlight. It’s also a comic-fan’s dream as a LOT of references, which were missing from Ang Lee’s movie, show up in this one. I’m very interested to see a sequel to this as they’ve started a few interesting balls rolling by creating characters we know from the comic. My one gripe was the simplistic way the script handles Tim Roth’s character. I love him as an actor, but he was just too deep to play this one character. Everything else, as I said, is a blast.

How did it leave me feeling? Very entertained. Finally, someone gets the idea that big dumb action movies don’t have to completely insult the audience (Michael Bay, I’m lookin’ at you, buddy!). Also liked the zinger at the end (though I don’t get why it shows up before the credits and not after).

Final Rating? SIYL - See If You Like - obviously, not everyone likes big dumb actioners, but if you do, I would think this movie would be for you. Also, if you’re a comic book purist (like me) this movie is for you since it got a lot right.

SHERRYBABY (2006)

or here to watch it now!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Definitely entertaining, but definitely depressing. For a control freak like me watching movies about people on the edge of destroying their own lives is hard to do.

Technically any good? The script was very solid and entirely believable. It was just depressing as hell. The acting was equally solid. It was nice to see Danny Trejo in a film where he wasn’t a hitman or some other kind of killer. It was also great to see Giancarlo Esposito in anything at all (he’s great in EVERYthing). The movie does a great job of deeply portraying characters who are themselves not deep as they try determine what is best for their own lives (this was the part that was hard for me to watch as a control freak). Director/writer Laurie Collyer does an excellent job in directing. The movie is very much on the flawless side.

How did it leave me feeling? Entirely satisfied. It was interesting to watch a movie that wasn’t about a driving throughline, but instead focuses on the characters’ choices, right or wrong. Most stories feature characters who are forced to choose one thing or another. Sherrybaby shows us characters that have options, but perhaps not the capability to make the best choices for themselves. The film ends up being about how the characters make their decisions.

What I got from the movie is to remember that we, as individuals, always have options and that very little forces us to react one way or another.

Final Rating? SIYL - See If You Like - this movie is not for everyone. It’s depressing and there is nudity, sex and drugs. It’s not romantic sex, either. It’s depressing sex (the drugs are depressing, too). But see it if you love strong performances, especially from women. Maggie Gyllenhaal is great.

Oliver Stone After W. Screening Opening Night

by ThePete 12:17 am 2008-10-18

Talk about weird coincidence. TheWife and I went out to see "W." tonight (watch for a Pocket Review tomorrow) and who does @Siskita notice on the way out but the guy who directed the damn film!

How do ya like that? Come all the way from Los Angeles to the Big Apple and we bump into a filmmaker. Go fig. Just wish I had a copy of my book on me. It’s jammed with conspiracy stuff–he’d totally love it.

The good news is that "W." is well done. The odd news is that it’s not a terribly deep film and seems to take only from the media as its source. Still that doesn’t stop it from being entertaining.

When I shook his hand I told him the movie was great–I probably should have said "very good" instead. Ah well. I’ve met famous people before and I still get a little starstruck–even though I think he’s kind of an asshole in real life. Still, he’s a great filmmaker.

ANYway, watch for my review tomorrow :)

A Word (or Several) About Piracy

by ThePete 10:59 am 2008-02-11

This post was originally written as a comment to a post at Mashable.com by Stan Schroeder about how media companies need to do a better job at distribution than the pirates in order to beat them. Before I continue, I’d just like to point out that the word “pirate” is probably an unfair term to be used in describing those who share coyrighted files. Original pirates were killers and would steal ships and cargo–both physical items–and then kill the owners. All music and movie “pirates” do is effectively make photocopies. The owners are alive and have only lost a fraction of the imagined value of their property. And can you really blame these “pirates”?

In today’s economy where money seems to be worth less and less every day, gas seems to cost more and more every day, people are finding that they live in a world where more and more people can’t afford to pay for things like movie tickets and music.

Humans seem to need (or at least be addicted to) art (even bad art). So if they can’t afford to pay full price they make the smart business choice and go for the cheapest price they can find.

It’s OK for record executives to make the most money they can, but it’s not OK for the consumer to save as much money as they can. This seems unfair since record company executives are perceived to make more money than their acts and the CDs they put out mostly suck. Why are they getting rich off of generally sucking when they could and should just be scraping by?

The solution to me is obvious: the record companies need to make less money and offer more value.

If you want to continue charging $15 for a CD, then make it worth it. Make sure all the songs on it are good. Include cool premiums, like keychains, toys or other cool items. I disagree with the suggestion that record companies should add more digital content since it will be pirated along with the music. The extra stuff has to be only available by buying it in stores.

I do agree with many who say that evolution is the key here–like it or not, the consumeristic environment is changing. Evolve or die, sadly.

Complaining that consumers are “greedy” or “selfish” or “disrespectful to the property of others” won’t change the fact that consumers are reacting to their own environments and adapting. They don’t want to go without so they’re evolving, too.

I’m sure everyone wants their favorite bands to survive and feed their families. But don’t blame “pirates” for not wanting to pay what, to many, are absurd prices for generally lackluster product. Wasn’t it Radiohead, just last year, who made more money letting consumers pay what they wanted than they would have if they’d released their CD in stores?

Stop defending the old ways and let’s all evolve together.

SCRIPTWRITER ON THE MOON

by ThePete 12:01 pm 2000-01-17

Perhaps you’ve seen the movie starring Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman. I did and boy did I laugh. Carrey did a wonderful job being a nut. I’m not sure he really caught that wild freaky look Kaufman had in his eyes, but Carrey did a pretty decent job. I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t even try to figure the guy out at all. I am not surprised. The guy was bizarre and a bit awe inspiring, it’s no surprise that the spineless powers that be in Hollywood wouldn’t want to try and actually form a theory on what Kaufman’s deal really was. HOWEVER, I did find the film VERY disappointing for another reason. If you base what you know about Andy Kaufman on Man on the Moon then you don’t know about his daughter. That’s right, Kaufman had a daughter. I think it’s pretty reasonable to think that when trying to put a man’s LIFE on screen one should be sure to include any major life events, like childhood, death and OFFSPRING PERHAPS?!?!? The film failed to mention that Kaufman had even HAD a sex life during his late teens early twenties, let alone that he GOT A WOMAN PREGNANT!! They also made no reference to the fact that he gave up his child for adoption or that he offered to marry the mother of his daughter. GREAT FILM. You watch - it’ll get an Oscar. That’s Hollywood, always striving to totally miss their own point.

AND A MERRY MOVIE TO ALL! (Did I really just type that???)

by ThePete 12:01 pm 1999-12-27

The only thing I actually LIKE about the Christmas holiday is that usually there are some fun films in theaters. This year seems to be no exception. Although I am writing this before the holiday begins (while goofing off at my desk at work) I know that I hope to run out and catch Galaxy Quest. Usually I don’t like parodies that are this directed. I hated Space Balls and Robin Hood: Men in Tights they were just too specific and weren’t random enough. I usually prefer parodies like Airplane! or Blazing Saddles that address a whole genre, but I think GQ looks to be an exception to my rule. I know I haven’t seen it yet, but I watch the trailer and first off, it makes me laugh, and secondly, it looks like the writer(s) actually took the world of Star Trek seriously and just tried to make jokes within that universe. Boy - I wish that the boys over at the Star Trek: Next Generation, Deep Space Nine & Voyager had thought about lightening things up a bit where characters say “oops” and try the old tried and true cliches, only to have them not work. So, I am making a prediction here - this will be a fun film that I will enjoy. So, if you want to see a film that I will enjoy (or possibly prove me wrong - yeah RIGHT!) then go catch Galaxy Quest.

Or would you rather watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” - AGAIN?

PS: My girlfriend and I just got back from Galaxy Quest and boy was I RIGHT! It was more fun and fulfilling than the last THREE Trek movies put together!
