The Disturbing Truth: Our Government is Protecting Us from Nothing

Dig that crazy redaction! It’s like the FOIA request from the ACLU that got this doc released got us
a whole lot of nothing–of course, despite appearances, it gave us enough rope to hang the Bushies
with… if only the Obamites will bother…

After reading today’s column from Andrew Sullivan at TheAtlantic.com, I have had my fears reinforced and have come to feel that the United States Government has been and continues to be a sociopathic entity. Sullivan’s column is called “The American Way Of Torture” and includes select quotes from the Office of the Inspector General’s report on how the CIA systemically tortured terror suspects during the Bush years. There are some disturbing truths that Sullivan’s piece forces us to consider:

1) this new OIG report pretty much damns the Bush Administration by proving they not only endorsed torture, but did so in writing.

2) this was definitely torture–what else do you call it when detainees are left in their own excrement?

3) Sullivan makes the point best:

In the past, the US was known for being a country whose soldiers would never mistreat prisoners; now, the US wants the world to know that US custody is something to be dreaded.

This is the same technique used by Grand Moff Tarkin in the original Star Wars movie–his exact line was “Fear will keep the systems in line…”

So yes, all those Daily Show jokes about Cheney were accurate: the United States was run by an evil, cartoonish bad guy.

Now this next part popped into my head thanks to Democracy Now, quoting one leader who spoke about Afghanistan:

The insurgency in Afghanistan didn’t just happen overnight, and we won’t defeat it overnight. This will not be quick nor easy. But we must never forget, this is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven, from which al-Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting; this is fundamental to the defense of our people.

That’s not an old quote from Bush–that’s Obama speaking at the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Phoenix, Arizona, last week.

So, here comes Obama, explaining that we have no choice but to be in Afghanistan, mimicking the same rhetoric that came from the Bush 43 Admin for so many years. We did it because the Taliban were harboring Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. My question is, how big a threat is Al Qaeda to America? OK, fine, Obama, they’re plotting
against us–but how many of us can they really kill?

In 2008 34,017 Americans were killed in car accidents according to the DOT.

In 2005 (the most recent year numbers are available) 159,217 Americans died of lung cancer alone according to the CDC.

In 2007 around 2 million people worldwide were killed by AIDS according to Avert.org.

In 2007 terrorism caused 22,685 deaths worldwide according to the US National Counter Terrorism Center. The number of American civilian deaths by terrorism is almost non-existent since Americans have to leave the country to be killed by a terrorist.

What this all means is that terrorism is a tiny, tiny, tiny threat to the American way of life. Yet, the Bush administration and now the Obama administration thinks it’s worth ignoring our morals and our principles to stop the killing of less than 23,000 Earthlings while seven times that number die of lung cancer in America, alone. 53,005 died of colorectal cancer, 27,259 American women died of gynecological cancers, 41,116 American women died of breast cancer–and I could go on.

So, in the end, our government is “protecting” us from nothing. We’re spending over a trillion dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan to stop this threat which does not even really exist. My only conclusion is that our government actually enjoys being horrible to people–it’s literally sociopathic. Either that, or our government is too addicted to fear, or rock-stupid, to check and compare the statistics, which took me about 30 minutes to do.

With all these people dying of Cancer in the US right now, wouldn’t it be nice to have a War on Cancer, instead of a War on Terror?

Naomi Klein on Corporate Opportunism

Wandering the vast Internetz over the today I came across a post on DeusExMalcontent.com from last year referencing a couple articles I missed from Naomi Klein.

Naomi Klein, in case you’ve not heard of her, is a Canadian journalist who covers things decidedly unpopular to the establishment. Now, I’m sure most people would think of her as a “left wing” reporter, but I see her work as more anti-both sides of the political spectrum. She tends to slam both parties after all–the Republicans for their blind support of businesses and banks, and the Democrats for their lack of spine.

The first article the Deus Ex Malcontent blog points to is a Harpers.Org article from September of 2004. It’s all about the US Iraq Attack and how it was never about WMD or Iraqi Freedom or even about the oil. It’s really about creating a blank slate by clearing the playing field, both literally and mentally.

Buy it!

This article seems to have been the basis for Klein’s latest book The Shock Doctrine which compares the very frightening practice of shock treatment therapy to the way the military and big business seem to work in concert to remake a people into good little capitalists. The idea is that shock treatment regresses a single person back to near-infancy (as the theory goes) so that a new personality can be grown on a blank slate. The Shock Doctrine, Klein argues is the same process but on groups of people.

In the case of Iraq, the entire country is bombed into psychosis so that the survivors will be willing to accept any kind of (capitalist) society so long as it doesn’t include the shit being bombed out of them.

The other article the Deus Ex Malcontent blog post points to is a piece by Klein on how the Beijing Olympics were just a huge advertisement for the efficiency of government oppression in creating the perfect little free market capitalist society. In the article, Klein explains:

These Olympics are the coming out party for a disturbingly efficient way of organizing society, one that China has perfected over the past three decades, and is finally ready to show off. It is a potent hybrid of the most powerful political tools of authoritarianism communism — central planning, merciless repression, constant surveillance — harnessed to advance the goals of global capitalism. Some call it “authoritarian capitalism,” others “market Stalinism,” personally I prefer “McCommunism.”

While I respect Naomi Klein, I find the word “McCommunism” a bit too glib, especially since the word communism stops meaning anything once people are told to buy and sell things that aren’t theirs in the first place. The idea behind communism (I thought) is that the state/people own everything right? But this isn’t anything vaguely communistic.

I’m thinking it’s more a “Corruptionist” society.

Let’s think about it for a sec:

In China, corporations buy their way into markets, essentially bribing the Chinese government to make foreign investment easier. If government wants the big businesses to function in their towns, cities and country, they’ll do what big business needs them to do. Anything to get the money flowing.

HEY! That’s just like America!

I guess that makes the US a Corruptionist society, too, huh?

Why Bush Should Have Let the Shoe Hit Him

Why did he duck? The shoes weren’t even loaded!

As Muntadhar al-Zaidi becomes a hero across Iraq for throwing his Iraqi-made shoes at George W. Bush during a recent surprise(d) visit to Iraq, I couldn’t help but think about how fast good old King George was to duck those shoes. Just last night, Steve Isaacs microblogged that he felt Bush dodging those shoes made the current occupant of the White House look competent and capable. That got me thinking.

In the movie Cool Hand Luke (spoiler alert) there’s a great scene where Paul Newman’s character proves his grit by standing up to the prison bully. He doesn’t win the fight–he doesn’t even get a few good punches in. In fact, he gets his ass pounded. The thing is, he keeps getting back up to get pounded again.

This is heroism, folks. This is taking responsibility for your actions. Newman’s “Luke” wanted to take on the big man and put him in his place, but he couldn’t do it with strength. So, he did it with honor.

So, it’s natural that, like a weasel, Bush ducks the shoes as they fly at his face. That’s what he’s been best at all this time, right? Ducking responsibility for one colossal fuck-up after another.

911 wasn’t his fault–it was the terrorists who hate our freedom. Forget that memo with the title “bin Laden determined to strike inside the United States.” Forget that it’s the government’s job to stop things like the 911 attacks from happening. Forget that there used to be FAA regulations that allowed for USAF fighters to shoot down any aircraft heading toward populated areas. What happened to that regulation, anyway? I remember what happened to Payne Stewart.

Katrina wasn’t his fault–how could they predict a storm like that and an aftermath like that? Well, National Geographic Magazine did.

Saddam not having WMD wasn’t Bush’s fault, either. How could they know that Saddam had no WMD? I mean, besides the fact that there was no hard evidence he had WMD?

Iraq being the absurd quagmire that it has become–certainly, there was no way to predict that! Of course, the British experienced it first hand… in 1917. I won’t bring up Dick Cheney’s own prediction of a mess back in 1992.

So, consider how just one of those shoes hitting Bush in the face would have made you feel. I know I’d have still laughed and played the clip over and over and over.

But him ducking the shoes?

Nothing new there. Just same old not-so-artful dodging from a man who didn’t even have the decency to make sure he was properly elected… either time.

It just shows you the kind of spineless, fearful little weasel George W. Bush is.

It’s a shoe, man. What’s it going to do to you? Knock out a tooth? Break the skin?

Bush, you’re supposed to be the president of the United States of America and you’re afraid of a couple shoes.

OK, this is the final episode of t5MS before a LONG break. See, it’s hard to make funny when the war is on your mind. I don’t know how Jon Stewart and his writers do it 4 days a week. I did it once and had to take three years off. :( Anyway, so, see if you like ThePete’s coverage of the Iraq Attack!

This episode of The 5 Minute Show was shot the day I learned that the US had invaded Iraq. I found this pretty disturbing and felt weird about doing a “funny” video show that week, so I didn’t. Don’t worry, I don’t stay serious very long after this episode. In fact, this is the second-to-last episode of The 5 Minute Show before a rather long hiatus. But don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing :D

Here is the final episode following ThePete’s adventures at an anti-Iraq War rally back in 2003, before the invasion happened. Sure, it didn’t do any good, but there were a lot of hot women at the protest! :D But seriously, it was fun to go and experience all those people who think war’s a bad idea.
