Chances of a WMD Attack in a big city better than 50%??

by ThePete 2:45 am 2008-12-02

Grabbed this on my iPhone just now and I have to admit that I don’t trust this task force. These guys MUST be lying or hopelessly paranoid. There is no way you could say there’s a better than 50/50 chance that a city will get hit by WMD.

Of course, bio or chem weapons I could see as being more likely, but still not a 50% chance, but nukes (which are what we all think of first when we hear the letters “WMD”)?? No way, man, and reporting this story this way is nothing short of alarmist and fear mongering.

Reuters is really doing us a disservice by not making it immediately clear that nukes are much less likely than chem or bio. And even knowing that, when I saw that headline and read that first paragraph, I thought they meant their was a better than even chance that nukes would definitely hit a big city–then reality set in and I remembered how the odds of any random big city being hit are dramatically against.

Thanks, Reuters, for making us crap our pants…again!

Oh and newsflash: government task forces have been getting it wrong for the last 8 years–probably longer–all the press ever does is highlight the fear and bury the logic. Way to unquestioningly quote the party line and question little-to-nothing.

Bad Economy = Violence +Cop Cutbacks = Mad Max?

So, apparently, police forces are facing budget cutbacks. The above screencap comes from an October 23, 2008 article (here: http://www.cnn.com/…index.html ) at CNN.com. It seems there are a lot of not directly-obvious dangers connected with this economic mess. Seems that while people aren’t paying their mortgages, they’re also not paying their taxes. Or maybe they’re choosing one over the other? Regardless, police forces are facing budget cuts–but that’s not what I’m worried about.

When I saw this article, I immediate remembered an AP.org article I had meant to blog on that was posted on CNN.com back on October 13. Check it out here: http://www.cnn.com/…index.html

It’s all about how people are turning to violence to deal with their own economic woes.

Now, the AP article talks about people who have tried or succeeded in killing themselves and/or their family in attempts to avoid taking responsibility for their debts. Disturbing stuff.

But I’m concerned with how far people are from using violence on others to solve their economic problems. Combine this with a shortage of police and we’re looking at a disturbing coincidence.

Now, I don’t think we’re at all close to "Road Warrior" stuff, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing to think about. How close do we want to get to hiring Mad Max as a policeman before we start talking about priorities in this mess?

Perhaps this is why our government believes we need an active duty army unit on American soil now–don’t know what I’m talking about? Go here: http://thepete.com/…de-the-us/ and/or here: http://thepete.com/…-inside-us

I think I’m going to stock up on motorcycle jackets and those bats with nails through them–just in case!!

THE WORLD IS STILL HERE

by ThePete 12:00 pm 2000-01-01

As I type this, it is two weeks before the New “Millennium” begins. But I type with great confidence, knowing that the world will still exist at 12:01. I predict that there will be no major Y2K problems and certainly no lives will be lost because of it. Another thing that will not have caused any major problems by the time you are reading this is terrorism. Just a few days previous to this writing a supposed terrorist was nabbed at the Canadian border up in Washington State. This has made a lot of people nervous - I even heard an FBI guy on news radio explain that he would not allow his kids to go to big events, like Times Square for New Year’s Eve. Oh nice - way to make folks paranoid. Especially since anyone who knows anything about Rudy Giuliani and his Orwellian version of the Big Apple knows that he runs that city under a microscope. I have no doubt that Giuliani will lock that place down so tight, not one single partier will be able to break wind without getting arrested for indecent odor. In fact, if you are reading this right now, that means that there was no bomb, or at least my girlfriend and I were not caught in any explosion since we had to live to actually upload this web page to the Internet! So THERE! Either that, or we were very lucky. You’ll find out next week when I write the next Bitch Page! WISH ME LUCK! I AM SO SCARED!!!
