DREAMGIRLS (2006)

by Siskita 9:10 am 2006-12-28

Positive Experience/Entertaining? With great voices, powerhouse acting, non-stop music (or at least it felt like it), Dreamgirls is a very positive and invigorating experience. As a singer, and as one who feels like Effie every once in a while, I had a very visceral reaction to the story and her plight. But the movie grabs the audience’s eyes and ears and doesn’t let go. The cast is rock-solid for the most part and extremely well cast.
Technically any good? Praise to the editing and the costume/makeup/hair designers - they all went overtime on this. Although some of the score arrangements leaned more towards the modern pop mentality, the music was well done. I can’t say how well it adhered to the original, expecially since it had 4 new songs inserted into the mix. These extra songs made it stuffed with a bit more music than one is used to, but I love music so I won’t mind listening. And the choreography is brilliant, perfect for both the time period and the screen.
How did it leave me feeling? Like singing! I think watching this movie made me toss and turn that night, I didn’t want to go to bed after!
Final Rating? GSN
