And Now for Something Fairly Personal

by ThePete 3:50 am 2008-08-15

Some of you may have noticed on my microblogstream (Twitter, Jaiku, etc.), a few posts about getting in touch with my high school sweetheart again. It was very random and ironic since the night before I happened to be doing a typical guy-thing by Googling ex-girlfriends. Although, I evolved my technique that night by moving from Google to Facebook. Lo’ and behold, there I found my girlfriend and, really, my best friend from high school. I looked at her picture, and the fact that she had a new last name (cringe!), and decided not to send her a friend request. She partially represented my past on the east coast (where I once again live). It is a past I have large, bad memories of. Not that my childhood was particularly rough, it was just something I was really quite happy to move on from.

Seeing all of these familiar sites, living in New York, is very surreal. I was excited at first–seeing my first A&P supermarket in about two decades was a strange thrill. Passing the sign pointing to the mall I was a rat in brought warm waves of nostalgia to my heart. For some reason, though, when I got to Manhattan-proper, those waves of nostalgia were replaced with much more negative feelings. It felt like regression, now–like I was “falling” back, instead of simply making a mature, adult choice to move with my wife to the Big Apple so she could pursue a career on Broadway.

The negative feelings got worse when I realized I’d likely have to take a dayjob I really didn’t want to take. I remember, when I was in high school, my step-dad was out of work for a while. I couldn’t understand why he couldn’t just get a job someplace. I understand now a bit more of what he was going through. I’m not an old man (and neither was he), but I do feel like I shouldn’t be doing certain types of jobs at my age–like retail–like temping–like anything entry-level. So, this added insult to injury.

Then throw in CRAZY heat and CRAZIER humidity (and us not having an air conditioner), a landlord who decided the first 6 months we paid up front would cover the last 6 months instead (eventually we worked it out), on top of being in a huge, unfamiliar city (along with a few other things I won’t even go into) and you’ve got a recipe for one depressed ThePete.

Then, there she was–looking a bit older, but still beautiful–not too different from the way I remembered her.

Grand Central Station Entrance

by ThePete 11:19 pm 2008-07-24

Grand Central Station Entrance, originally uploaded by thepetecom.

Is this not one of the more impressive façades you’ve ever seen on a
train station?

I’ve been to New York City a couple dozen times during my life and I
don’t think I’ve ever seen the outside of it before today. Damn impressive.

Too bad no one designs buildings like this anymore.

TheNYCMove day 33(?): The full move-in Post-Poned

by ThePete 1:40 am 2008-06-14

Sadly, that plan I mentioned yesterday? Well, it got totally shot to hell when we discovered that U-Haul doesn’t have a “free-miles” plan and Penske is only open until 3pm on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday. Even if we rented the moving van right when they opened, we’d be unable to get the thing back in time. We can’t keep it for more than a day because of the parking issue–where could we park a 17 foot moving van? Oh and can I just say what a dickweed the guy I spoke to at U-Haul was? Man, he made it sound like I was a moron when I asked if there was a way to NOT get charged for miles. As though it was in the Constitution or something.

Wasn’t it Thomas Jefferson who once said: “No man shall get free miles while renting a vehicle that hold his belongings.”

Oh wait, no he didn’t. Damn, I should have gotten the U-Haul jerk’s name.

Anyway, so the NEW plan is to buy an air mattress to sleep on (I’ve had it with our friend’s sofa bed) and use it at the new place Saturday night and until we get our mattress from Jersey. Then clean the new place up after hiring a car service to get most of the stuff we’ve been living with (including the cats) up to our new pad. Sunday we’ll take anything that didn’t make it into the hired car onto the subway (if possible), even if it takes more than one trip. If we have some time, we’ll head down to Pearl River Market (an AMAZING place filled with great Asian-themed home furnishings) and pick up some apartment stuff. Then, Monday morning we spend the day doing the original plan.

On Wednesday, we’ve got the new Ikea in Brooklyn opening, so we’ll head out there for the basic furniture we’ll need (bed frame, couch, book cases, TV stand, kitchen table) and have it delivered. Everything else we need I hope we’ll find at Pearl River or at place nearby called National Wholesale Liquidators, both down in Soho.

Hm, that reminds me–we don’t have a TV–we’ll have to work out a time to pick one up. o_O

Sorry to babble on, but it’s helping me work out what the plan is.

You’d think doing something as simple as moving in would be easier.

…or not.

FINALLY GOT UBUNTU ON MY XO! Only to discover the trackpad is unusable and I can’t find the Internet settings.

Having Some Plugin Issues…

by ThePete 4:42 pm 2008-01-30

So, I’m trying to stop TheMicroblogs from showing up on my mainpage, but Ultimate Category Excluder isn’t working. Also, I noticed that Twitter Tools isn’t assigning the correct author or category to my Twitters. OH, and TheAdmin posts (like this one) no longer show up in the main column. LOVELY.

Who Says Cats Aren’t Affectionate?

by ThePete 3:20 pm 2008-01-30

My older cat, Ecks, and I have been together for longer than my wife and I (he’s 11). When I’m ignoring him while at my desk, he won’t just wait for me to have a moment to pay him some notice, he’ll just jump up behind my back onto my chair and hang out there in the hopes that I’ll pet him. Today he did it again, but this time he moved over onto the armrest of my chair, leaned into me and then shoved his head in my face when I looked down at him. ^_^

My Computers Have Gremlins

by ThePete 2:00 am 2008-01-29

So, the XO’s OS is buggy and doesn’t handle memory well. I can’t do things on this machine that I *could* do on my old 333 Mhz Windows 98 laptop. As in, write a novel-length file in a word processor while simultaneously being able to surf the web. The former has to let me save files the way I’m used to doing it (unlike Sugar OS’ Write "activity") and the latter must let me keep bookmarks that I can easily access (unlike Sugar OS’ browser which requires you find the instance in which you made the bookmarks in Journal).

So, I’m trying to get Ubuntu working from my SD card. Alas I’m having one problem after another after another–and the problems are catching. My MacBook crashed in the middle of unpacking a tarball of an Ubuntu image.

Pac Gentleman & ThePete’s Part Time Passion

by ThePete 6:03 pm 2008-01-25

One of my passions, when I have time to embrace it, is custom toy design. I’ve been into toys since I was a little kid and still have quite a few as I approach middle-age. There’s something about the innocence of toys that inspires my imagination to extreme levels.

Well, there’s a growing movement of artists who work in the medium of toys. Companies like Kid Robot put out white vinyl toys that you buy and then paint yourself. I have done a few of these, but I’m just an amateur. The guy who did the piece above, who calls himself "Doktor A," is clearly a freakin’ master.

You can learn more about that piece and see other work Doktor A has done here:

I’ll get around to posting some pictures of my own toy work soon. I just thought "Pac Gentleman" was something I *had* to share. :)

TheKey (my book) is available!

by ThePete 11:25 pm 2008-01-24

http://www.lulu.com/…nt/1233032

In case you missed it…

My Book is available!!

From the back cover:

"TheKey follows the adventures of a handful of amateur conspiracy theorists as they go on a quest to find and destroy one of the most powerful computer viruses ever devised. A virus so powerful, it is capable of destroying every computer on the Internet. Along the way they discover that every conspiracy they’ve heard of is true and worse than they could have imagined. They also learn that accepted history itself is a lie crafted by the very people who are out to beat them to that virus–a tiny computer program known as, TheKey."

I tend to tell people that it’s an alien-free "X-Files" crossed with "Lord of the Rings."

To buy it for just $11 (+S&H) go here:

In case you forget, you can also find it at:

Bush "Jokes" About Being a Dictator :)

by ThePete 10:30 pm 2008-01-24

OK, I’ll admit it, I still haven’t forgotten the mess that was the 2000 election–I feel like we never did fully find out who won for sure. That aside, just a couple weeks after being named President (on December 19, 2000, source: http://politicalhumor.about.com/…otes_3.htm ), Bush joked in the above video about how his life would be easier if he were a dictator.

"Dictator" or "decider," which ever you’d prefer to call him, with the signing statements he’s added to hundreds of laws he’s signed into existence (http://www.boston.com/…s_of_laws/ ), he effectively has the power to break said laws when ever he wishes, and it seems, to many, that he has.

So, "decider" or "dictator," "tomato" or "tomahto," I sure wish someone in Washington would have the guts to call this whole Bush-thing off.

TheAuctions are BACK! Go look!:)

by ThePete 5:24 pm 2008-01-21

FINALLY, I’ve posted some more auctions on eBay to help with the Japan-move fund. Ironically, everything I’ve listed for auction are toys I picked up as a fan of Japanese anime and monster movies. :(

So, if you like Godzilla, Gamera, Evangelion or Ghost in the Shell, or know someone who does, please stop by:

And see if you like anything. Thanks!!

The 5 Minute Show Episode 1

by ThePete 2:04 pm 2008-01-17

Waaaay back in 2003, I (and some friends) produced a video podcast called "The 5 Minute Show." It was just something we (or I) would throw together, usually on a Sunday, once a week. Generally, it’s a comedy show, but early on I got serious for a few episodes (thanks to the war). Of course, comedy is relative–so, your results may vary ;) Also, you can see me when I had green hair and no beard. :) Oh yeah! And my wife is in this one, too!

I’m currently reuploading them to Revver (to hopefully make some money off of them) so I figured I’d mention them here. :) Please feel free to leave comments (good or bad).

Thanks!
