LOLbama: I CAN HAZ HOPEBURGER

by ThePete 1:19 pm 2008-11-22

LOLbama, originally uploaded by thepetecom.

Nicked this from poobah.tumblr.com/post/59688866

I think this bit of photomanipulation really captures the almost absurd level of hope they many Americans are putting on BHO.

I’m just waiting for that economic stimulus check he promised to get to us before winter!

I Want Hugh Jackman’s Dentist

by ThePete 12:48 am 2008-11-22

When I can finally afford to go to the dentist again (Mr. Obama, I’m ready when you are) I think I’ll go with Mr. Jackman’s. Look at those choppers!

Yes, it’s the weekend, time for fun posts!!

Time: BHO=FDR

Time: BHO=FDR, originally uploaded by thepetecom.

I saw this on a news stand the other day while I was out with my fried
Keith and it cracked me up. Don’t know if I agree or not. I just
hope BHO doesn’t let a Pearl-Harbory thing happen the way FDR did. Oh
and building the bomb–that was pretty lame, too.

TheVlog for ELECTION DAY 2008! WATCH ME VOTE!

by ThePete 3:38 pm 2008-11-04
YAY–this is kinda like Christmas for me–well, if it weren’t for all the work I’m doing following the news and trying to spot any stories on election irregularities. So far, I’ve spotted a handful of instances, but my voting experience was as smooth as silk–well, aside from the technical glitches.

OH and the technical glitches had NOTHING at all to do with voting–which was GREAT. I was trying to stream video from inside the booth using Flixwagon, but it crashed and then only uploaded a few seconds of footage. Qik.com, on the other hand, saved the day. Some of the footage in this vlog entry was shot on my iPhone via Qik.com. Plus TheWife told me she was able to watch me vote from my website. Pretty cool, huh?

So here it is–proof I voted for a black man! We’re totally living in the future now!

Once you vote black, you don’t go back!!

(I’ve been waiting for weeks to say that! :P)

GO VOTE!

Obama Aces Electoral College in CNN Poll

by ThePete 1:53 am 2008-10-29
utterli-image
Don’t know if you saw this, but I thought it was interesting, so I thought I’d post it. According to CNN (here: http://www.cnn.com/…alculator/ ), Obama’s got 277 electoral votes (based on polls, trends and cash spent on ads) and McCain has just 174. CNN also claims that there are 87 that still could go either way.

So, let’s say McCain gets all of those 87 toss-offs–er–ups. How many electorals would he have then? 261.

That’s not enough to win the presidency.

To be clear, those numbers include both "safe" and "leaning" numbers for each candidate. Still, those numbers are important to note.

Meanwhile, for several days now, FiveThirtyEight.com has had Obama with over 340 electorals.

Of course, this all means nothing if we don’t all vote.

I just realized "aces" in the headline of this post might have been a bit of an exaggeration. Gomen, gomen–just attempting to be alliterative.

ThePete Wins Daily Mug Shot of the Day!

Hey, this was really neat–my fellow users over at DailyMugShot.Com felt that my mugshot for Monday, October 27, 2008 was the best.

I guess DMS users really dig the intense pensivity of that shot… or maybe it was the Dalek, or my ThePeteMan action figure or maybe that vaguely familiar cow back there…

Why does she seem so familiar?? ;)

Compliments of ThePete and http://johnmccainisyournewlogo.com/

I think it was in debate #3 when McCain articulated his view that "the health of the mother" had been "stretched to mean almost anything."

That’s my memory, anyway. I’ll try to get the exact quote when I get to a machine that actually has cut & paste capabilities. Damn you, iPhooone!

ThePocket Vlog: Alan Admits to Oopsing Economy

by ThePete 3:43 pm 2008-10-24
Here’s ThePocketVlog for October 24, 2008.

Don’t want to watch the video? Read on then!

Amazingly enough, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan admitted yesterday that trusting the banks to self-regulate was a little bit like trusting a fox to sleep inside the hen house.

I’m paraphrasing, of course. Here’s an excerpt from the headlines of today’s broadcast of Democracy Now (transcript and entire show available here: http://www.democracynow.org/…/headlines )–it’s Alan Greenspan speaking his own words in testimony yesterday on the Hill: "I made a mistake in presuming that the self-interest of organizations, specifically banks and others, were such as that they were best capable of protecting their own shareholders and their equity in the firms."

OOPSY!

Looks like deregulation does not, in fact, cause anything bad to happen, it just *allows* bad things to happen when greedy bastards are in charge.

The admission also proves that Alan Greenspan is not a Republican since Republicans are incapable of admitting mistakes.

"Why We Fight" Docu-Maker: Voting Is Not Enough

by ThePete 3:39 pm 2008-10-20
utterli-image
A couple years back Eugene Jarecki made a well-received documentary about why America fights its wars today (which happened to feature a clip of John McCain saying bad things about the military industrial complex). Jarecki was on Democracy Now this morning and he wrote a piece at HuffPo, as well, both hyping his new book "The American Way of War" and hyping what he thinks every American should do about our government.

Seems he thinks voting is great, but it’s not enough.

Tell me about it! :P

I’m not very trusting of our election system or our balloting system to expect voting to be enough–but even if the way we elect our leaders was flawless, it still wouldn’t be enough. In his interview with Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman this morning (transcript here: http://www.democracynow.org/…erican_way ), goes into more detail:

But I dare say, no matter how busy people are, we all have two things that we can do that are very crucial. One is to figure out, honestly, candidly, that we all have a bunch of time we waste in life watching American Idol, surfing the internet, whatever we do that’s our version of wasting time. And we all have something, no matter how busy we are. It’s sort of human nature. You’ve got to take some of that time and figure out how to direct it toward social change, because if all you do is vote at election time and sort of wake up and go, “Oh, my god, something’s happening; I’ll throw my vote in,” it services your conscience, it services your feel—your desire to feel like you’re doing something, but the actual practical implications of that are that a single candidate, up against the incredibly tangled corruption of this system, is hopeless. And they’re made more hopeless by the fact that we are disengaged, because without a public mandate, somebody like Barack Obama will enter the White House, and, as you see, it’s already happened in the evolution of his policy paradigms, he’ll enter the White House without a mandate. And if he doesn’t have a mandate, those enormous forces of power will give him a mandate. They’ll give him a very clear mandate.

And which source of support will he support then?

What Jarecki is ultimately saying is that we’ve all got to do more than just "pay the minimum." You know how you’ve got that credit card bill and you just pay the minimum due every month yet the amount you owe never goes down? It’s like that. You can’t vote and expect change.

Voting, alone, pretty much guarantees that the system will NEVER change–it, in fact, promises that the system will stay exactly the same, it’ll just be run by your guy. So, if you think there’s something wrong with the way things are run, you have to do more than just vote.

I do more every day–I blog. I’m broke because I don’t make any real amount of money off of this stuff. I do it because I am trying to change things. Part self-expression/part-picking up the mainstream media’s slack, I’m trying to help make the world a better place by pointing out things you might have missed.

It’s not leading a revolution or championing a law, but it’s SOMEthing to help.

So, on November 4, 2008, when you go to vote, don’t just pay the minimum. Take it further–start a blog, join a cause, do something to help the world be a better place.

FactCheck.org Deconstructs Debate #3 #debate08

by ThePete 5:35 pm 2008-10-16
utterli-image
Yay! FactCheck.org has released their report on last night’s final presidential debate. Highlights include:

Obama and the ACORN "Controversy": It turns out the fabric of space, time and our democracy will not be threatened by this voter registration fraud as a Republican judge has stated that the fraud has nothing to do with allowing illegal voting.

JTP (Joe The Plumber): It turns out he’ll be getting a tax cut if he buys the company he works for.

Obama’s Health Care: Obama overstated the power of his health care package to lower premiums. (So much for health care being a right!)

McCain on Obama’s Health Care: He’s wrong and claims Obama’s plan is something it isn’t (there’s that pesky Straw Man Argument again).

Obama on McCain’s Negative Ads: Turns out McCain’s ads were 100% negative during one recent week, only. (Still, it’s the thought that counts in my mind!) Oh and at times Obama has run a higher percentage of attack ads (are those the same as negative ads?).

McCain on Columbia: Apparently Canada imports way more agricultural products from America than Columbia does (McCain claimed Columbia was #1).

Obama as Maverick: Turns out Obama has voted with his party 97% of the time. Yeah… ouch. We indy-types don’t like that. SIGH.

For PLENTY more, head over to FactCheck.org or just go here: http://www.factcheck.org/…_no_3.html

If only all reporters and news orgs could be as fact-oriented as these guys. I think we’d be in much better shape as a country.

Dow Drop Not as Soul-Shattering as Yesterday

by ThePete 5:14 pm 2008-10-10
utterli-image
So, here’s some good news for folks worried about the future of the US economy!

The Dow didn’t drop as far today as it did yesterday! YAY!

Well, you should still be worried, but hey, you can be worried a little bit less!

See, the Dow (the prime index to judge the entire American stock market) only dropped 128 points from where it was yesterday. That’s a drop of 1.49% to 8451 points.

Of course, those numbers are all relative, being compared only to yesterdays panic-inducing digits which were arrived at after a 680 point drop.

Aaaand you can see, when you look at the graph, that the Dow spent most of the day fighting with gravity.

The idea to take away from this post, and also the stock market’s performance today, is that the drop slowed, in the big picture. Will the it continue to drop tomorrow? Who knows? Today’s graph looks MUCH more volatile than yesterday’s (here: http://thepete.com/…o-can-tell ) so I’ve got no idea.

Still, it’s nice to see that it wasn’t so bad today.

Gotta think positive, right?

RIGHT???

Pinkberry!

Last night after checking out a pier for pedestrians on the Hudson (just up the river from where the cruise ships dock) we made our way to the Pinkberry near the intersection of Broadway and Amsterdam. As these places pop up more and more often, don’t hate me for my loyalty to them. I was into Pinkberry long before it was cool to be.
