Would you recommend this? Because this is part of the original Bubblegum Crisis universe, I say yes, I would recommend it. However, it didn’t really blow me away, like the original series did and without the tie-in, I can’t see myself recommending it to anyone but fans of the franchise.

Technically any good? The animation is noticeably worse and the designs, while very similar, are different from the original designs used in Crisis. However, all of the same charm of the characters are intact, visually, in the story and in the acting. The stories themselves, I found to be a little lackluster and not terribly memorable. There were some nice moments that made this OVA worth watching for original BGC fans, however.

The music is good, as always, as is the voice-over acting (duh, it’s anime).

How did it leave me feeling? Sadly, in the end, I didn’t feel that strongly for Bubblegum Crash. I love cyberpunk, though, so I didn’t mind sitting through it–especially since the original series was what sucked me into anime in the first place.

Would you sit through it again? Not by itself, but I assume I’ll eventually sit through every episode in the Bubblegum Crisis universe again one day and I’ll be happy with watching these three eps when I do.

Would you recommend it? Definitely. In fact, I think most of us in the Western World are so in the dark about water, I think this documentary should be required watching.

Technically any good? While it does come across as very heavy-handed and preachy and doesn’t try too hard to present any opposing view points (though it does try), the facts it presents are undeniable and incredibly disturbing. It’s downright scary how much power big business has over the water in the ground. And just think about how important water is to commerce–as a result, water ends up being the number 3 commodity behind oil and electricity. Yeah. I didn’t know that either. Another fact it presents is that humans account for just 10% of the water use in the world. The rest is split unevenly between agriculture and business–the majority of which goes to business.

How did it leave me feeling? Angry, for two reasons. First, because no one seems to be aware of or have a problem with these giant companies using and controlling so much water. Second because the film pretends that a few isolated victories against these corporations means that we can stop them. Protests have stopped some companies from essentially stealing water, but Coca-Cola, for instance, is a huge company. They didn’t lose that battle in India, they just put their resources someplace else instead of wasting time with a bunch of protesters. So, I could have done without the corny, “speak truth to power” BS and stuck with the fear-mongering since that’s what is needed.

Would you sit through it again? YES! I want to go over the facts presented again and try to pick up on things I missed the first time through. This docu is jammed with interesting stuff and interesting people.

Seriously, watch this movie!!

Would you recommend this? Definitely, if you’re looking for a sweet movie that’s maybe just a bit darker than you’d expect. It’s not dark, but wasn’t as warm and light as I thought it would be.

Technically any good? There’s only a bit toward the end where the script starts to let us down–it’s just a slow patch where I found myself confused as to what the heck the movie was doing. However, everything around that slow patch is pretty solid. The movie is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play and it shows in the witty dialogue and ironic situations. The acting is as spot-on as you’d expect. However, I found Jimmy Stewart’s pantomime to be a bit less convincing than I would have liked, though I’m sure it was fine for the day and certainly didn’t knock me out of the movie.

How did it leave me feeling? Warm and fuzzy inside. I usually don’t like to feel that way, so I give the movie even more credit for making me not mind. Three-cheers for being a bit darker, too. I’m sure if someone ever (god forbid) remade this movie it would be a good deal lighter.

Would you sit through it again? I would sit through it again, but it’s one of those movies that does a great job–so good that I don’t think I’d want to sit through it again for a while.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Geh… kind of. I guess. But annoying as hell, too.

Technically any good? ARG! NO! It meanders all over the place and is frustrating at every turn. The characters in the movie do everything against logic yet somehow (duh, because the writer wants it) they are able to get away with their rock-stupid choices.

Seriously, at almost every point of this movie, there is a character that is doing something ill-advised, illogical, or downright STUPID and yet, fate (the writer) allows things to generally work out for the characters in the end.

I think the film was trying to be some sort of fable, but ends up being very uneven and contrived.

The acting was perfectly reasonable, but no amount of good acting could undo the rest of the flaws of this film.

How did it leave me feeling? FRUSTRATED. I had to have one of my venting sessions afterwards because it was just a mess. I really like Tom Tykwer as a director–I loved Run Lola Run and enjoyed Winter Sleepers quite a lot. However, The Princess and the Warrior was just annoying as hell to sit through.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Well, I enjoyed it, but you might not. To say this movie is dry is an understatement (but I like dry).

Technically any good? I think it manages to do exactly what it tries to do. It’s a little meandering, but not in any way that really harms the film. Don’t expect a clear plot, though–it doesn’t have one. It’s more like a series of events in this young girl’s life mashed into the span of a few days. If you’ve heard of the absurdist genre, then you’ve found one of the few films in existence that can be called absurdist. Think parody without being funny and you kind of know what absurdism is.

The acting is spot-on from the cast–though I can’t say being boring, whiny, suburban types is that difficult to play. Heather Matarazzo is pretty amazing as the lead.

How did it leave me feeling? Entertained, but dryly so. You might say that if William Shakespeare had grown up in the modern suburbs and was Woody Allen, this would be one of his tragedies. Nothing epic, mind-blowing or tremendous, but a bitingly accurate commentary of modern suburban life where everyone suffers and there’s no happy ending.

Final Rating? SIYL – See If You Like. It’s VERY dry.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Definitely! It put a human face on these people we know only from the news.

Technically any good? Everything was very solid. The acting was incredible. The script was tight and the story was believable. The only “however” I have here is that the title suggests the movie is actually about the Queen of England. It really isn’t. It’s only about a part of her life. As such, I found it disappointing.

Maybe it was because I was alive and paying attention during the time period the movie takes place and as a result I didn’t need the review of events the film puts its viewers through. That’s not to say it wasn’t a nicely done review, I just wanted to know more about her life. I mean, of all of the incredible things Queen Elizabeth II has lived through, they picked how she dealt with (former) Princess Diana’s death. It was an interesting period, but surely, World War II, or the Falklands, or even the build-up to the Iraq War would have made for better cinema.

How did it leave me feeling? Definitely happy that I saw such wonderful performances from Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen, but ultimately disappointed that we didn’t get more of a history lesson. I won’t even go into how it was definitely a pro-British-Royalty propaganda movie. (Talk about white-entitlement issues! SHEESH!)

Final Rating? NFI – NetFlix It. Worth seeing for the good acting, but ultimately, I don’t think it’s really that worth seeing.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Wow–this movie is pretty incredible. Sadly, it’s also got some major flaws that aren’t entirely the director’s fault.

Technically any good? This is one of those rare occasions where I will include what I’d consider a mild spoiler. So here, I offer a SPOILER WARNING. That’s not to say that I’m about to divulge a plot point or anything that might ruin the movie for you. However, this might change the way you view the film or it might even influence you to not bother seeing the movie. So, please keep that in mind as you read the next paragraph. YOU HAVE BEEN SPOILER(ish) WARNED!

SPOILER(ish): This film was to be the first of a series of films based on a huge novel. Sadly, the sequels were never made. As a result, there are quite a few plot lines that are never actually resolved. One MAJOR plot line is included in that, sadly. END SPOILER(ish).

This is very frustrating as this film is really amazing. The acting is superb from almost everyone in the cast and Nakadai, in particular, is INCREDIBLE. Sadly, the ending is simply not satisfying, but keep in mind that just about every other damn thing in the movie is.

FX, for the period, are spot-on. Most of the time, I found myself visually convinced the lead was really slicing into his enemies and sometimes really grinding that blade in there, too. Yikes! OH and the fights were all REALISTIC. None of this BS wire-work that is way to common place now. No gravity leaps or super-powered limbs. Just good, old fashioned (literally) sword fighting.

How did it leave me feeling? Disappointed (see spoiler) but definitely entertained. If films as good as this were still made today, I’d love to see a remake done and perhaps a sequel or two. :)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? It was entertaining, but it was pretty damn preachy.

Technically any good? The story holds together and is entertaining (as I mentioned) but ultimately it comes off like a screed against the Republicans. Not that the film’s criticism aren’t fair, it’s just that pounding on Republicans for the entire length of a film does not a good movie make (at least, not usually). The good news is that the plot and acting were interesting enough to keep me paying attention.

The story and script are both as tight as you’d expect from a John Sayles film, and the acting is as solid, too. Most notably for me, Danny Huston who, I believe, is now among my favorite actors thanks to his performance in this movie. I already liked him quite a bit after his turn in The Proposition but seeing him play the flawed-but-trying-to-do-the-right-thing detective in this film allowed me to really see his range. The guy is pretty damn good.

How did it leave me feeling? Satisfied and unsatisfied at the same time. While it was obviously a diatribe against the Bush Administration, I found myself wishing it wasn’t so ham-fisted about it. Not that I feel sympathy for the Republicans, but because I feel like Democrats aren’t entirely innocent, either. In this film the liberals are portrayed as just generally loserish and not corrupt. I wish!

Final Rating? NFI – NetFlix It – That’s what I did. By far one of Sayles’ worst movies (but Sayles is brilliant, so keep that in mind). I have yet to see Sunshine State, but give me something infinitely more subtle like Lonestar or even Passion Fish over this.

ZEITGEIST (2007)

It’s Documentary Thursday at reviews.thepete.com, when I post a pocket review of a documentary on a given topic that interests me. One thing to bear in mind is that not all documentaries deserve the name “documentary.” However, not all documentaries have to include a British-accented voice-over and a big-money distributor to be worth watching.

Watch or buy it!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Definitely a positive experience, but I think the filmmaker was a little overzealous with some of the shock treatment-style cinematic devices he uses in this film. This is another in an ever-longer line of “opiniontaries” that generally try to come across as a documentary but ultimately are just trying to put forward their own agenda. Not that this is that different from what other “more acceptable” documentaries do.

Technically any good? This film is incredibly effective. Moving at a quick pace, this film picks you up, carries you along, smacks the crap out of you (and your belief systems) and then drops you off at the side of the road like a cheap prostitute. I’ve heard from friends and strangers that this film changed their lives. I can’t say it changed mine, but it did have an effect.

Over the years I’ve watched a LOT of so-called “conspiracy documentaries.” They all claim to have the answers and the truth and the warnings about the coming “New World Order” blah-blah-blah. I watch them because they are hilarious and, creepily enough, sometimes accurate. Zeitgeist takes the best, most believable of these conspiracy theories and rolls them into one film.

For that reason, I think this is the most effective film to watch if you’re growing dissatisfied with the way the world is run. Zeitgeist does a good job of explaining where our culture comes from and where it is likely going (though I didn’t find myself agreeing with it all the time).

Sadly, it gets mired in 911-related shock tactics that made me wonder if the filmmaker realized how hypocritical he was actually being. Like most opiniontaries, this one gets a few things wrong and the film’s use of what Naomi Klein calls “The Shock Doctrine” as a cinematic technique has the power to undo the rest of the good the film does.

How did it leave me feeling? Definitely educated. After growing up a news-junky and then spending the last seven years exploring the world of conspiracies (for a novel series I’ve written), I do have to say that I have no idea what to believe about our past, present or future. And this film doesn’t help make things clearer.

It does point out a lot of evidence that suggests our civilization is largely built on lies told by power-hungry people who want to control everything through the control of money.

Gotta admit, the film has a point.

Final Rating? GSN – Go See Now – BUT WITH A WARNING: While Zeitgeist is a genuinely powerful and effective movie, it does rely on many of the same tactics it criticizes the “ruling elite” of using to control the masses. It’s important to watch ANY documentary with a clear and critical mind. And most importantly, when you’re done watching it, do some research. Read up on some of the things you’ve been told about.

If nothing else, by presenting such a radically negative view of Western Society, documentaries like this remind us to think for ourselves. Even if you don’t agree, it’s important to consider what other people say. Zeitgeist, I think, nails a lot of things on the head, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

Click the poster image above to go to the official site where you can watch the movie and its sequel (I’ll be reviewing it next week), or buy copies of both on DVD.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? YES. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie for adults that actually respected my intelligence and entertained me in a fun way at the same time.

Technically any good? Based on a play of the same name, this movie is pretty tight script and story-wise. There is almost nothing I would have done differently and there was no point in which I was bored. The movie tells its story, develops its characters and slides you to the edge of your seat with subtle skill. The acting from Michael Caine, Dyan Cannon and Christopher Reeve is is solid and very convincing.

The only flaw, I felt, was the music–while there was nothing wrong with it, in theory, I felt it was jarring in a movie that simply didn’t need any music. The performances and the editing are enough to pull you along and keep you enveloped. The perfectly reasonable, but fairly period, music knocked me clean out of the film.

How did it leave me feeling? Definitely entertained and definitely satisfied. It made me want to read the play and maybe even want to be in it. :)

Final Rating? SIYL – See If You Like intense but not terrifying moments. There are some definitely adult themes here, but for intelligent adults looking for a fun movie that won’t make you feel like you’re being spoken down to, this is a perfect pick.

If you haven’t seen this movie, don’t talk about the plot with anyone. Conversations about this film with even those who haven’t seen it are tantamount to spoiler mine fields that are very likely to destroy your first experience watching this film.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Well, I’ve got to say no, not really. I know it seems silly to even review a film like this, but hey, I watched it, might as well write about it. But no, this was not a positive experience.

Technically any good? This is your standard, bad b-movie, designed to entice dumb teenage boys to watch in the hopes of finding some nudity and there is a bit of it, so that’s nice for those of us who enjoy seeing topless women. Of course, one of them gets raped, so you might want to bear that in mind.

Aside from the rape scene, the film is generally what you would have expected to see on MST3K since it’s pretty much on the level of Hobgoblins (and even shares a cast member). The acting is as flat as you’d expect, though I never blame the actors. The story is damn near non-existent, though I have to say it’s more coherent than what we’ve got going on Battlestar Galactica, so there is that.

How did it leave me feeling? Achy neck from shaking my head so much. Even as a dumb b-movie, this isn’t one I’d recommend. I also found it kind of weird that while we see a topless woman get raped, during the healthy, nice sex scene between consenting adults we see later on, there is no nudity. Kinda sad if you ask me. I always prefer to see boobs in a positive situation.

Final Rating? DNS – Do Not See. There are loads of better (read: more fun) bad b-movies out there (even with nudity) if you’re interested in doing your own MST3K-style DIY quipathon.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Wow–what a great movie. Powerful and depressing that these events really happened.

Technically any good? It was a little disjointed, probably due to the fact that it was based on real life, but generally, it was very well put together. The acting was great, as you would expect from a John Sayles movie and the attention to periodness also seemed spot-on. I should mention that a couple of the characters end up being very pat badguys. It’s obvious who they are and I don’t blame the actors for this. I blame the script and the direction, so I blame Sayles for both, since he was also the screenwriter. Still these few mistakes don’t ruin the movie, not by a long shot.

How did it leave me feeling? Depressed, as I mentioned above, these events really happened. If you’re curious what I’m referring to, just see the movie and you’ll see what I mean. It’s worth it and what’s scary is that it all happened on American soil and still does happen today in other countries.

Final Rating? GSN – Go See Now – it’s an important (if flawed) history lesson (a flawed history lesson is better than no lesson about this little heard-of part of American history).

Sadly, this film is no longer in print. However, I was able to Netflix it. You can probably find it used via Amazon.com, too.

After watching this movie, you might want to check out the Wikipedia.org article for the Battle of Blair Mountain which was an event that was inspired by the events depicted in the climax of the film Matewan.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Haha, positive? Sure, if you count seeing Farah Fawcett’s nude boobs for a split second. But definitely, if you count seeing Kirk Douglas’ nude butt for much longer. Yep, before Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises, there was Kirk Douglas taking on Harvey Keitel in the nude. Surprisingly, Keitel was not nude (sorry, ladies!).

Technically any good? The FX, for 1980, were perfectly reasonable. A little cheezy in that there probably isn’t liquid water in the rings of Saturn, but nothing that screamed “NOT REAL” at me (again, for 1980). The sets were downright gorgeous. The acting was fine, I bought Douglas and Fawcett, though their relationship seemed creepy as hell. Of course, Keitel was supposed to be bland–however, it must have been hilariously bland on set since they dubbed him with a British guy’s voice. Yeah, try not giggling at that.

How did it leave me feeling? The ending was a seriously big: “WHAAAAA?”

Honestly, worst ending ever. Director Stanley Donen really should have just stuck with musicals. I do give him points for trying something else, though. Still, not sure what was up with that ending.

Final Rating? NFI – NetFlix It. While I can’t really recommend this movie, it is something fun to have on while doing something else or if you’re making fun of it. It’s great fodder for MST3K-style quipping. Sadly, it’s out of print and is currently unavailable. Luckily, you can watch it via Netflix’s Instant Play and I found it on Amazon.com’s on-demand service.

Documentary Thursday brings you my Pocket Review of Maxed Out a documentary/opiniomentary about the credit crisis that contributed to the economic crisis we’re experiencing in America right now. Like In Debt We Trust, this movie came out in 2006 and points out many of the problems that functioned as serious indicators of the rough road we’re currently traveling on. It’s a shame more people don’t watch documentaries! Ah well. On with the review:

Buy it!

Watch it now!
Buy the book!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Definitely. This documentary was more in-depth regarding the nuts-and-bolts of the credit industry than any docu I’ve seen to date.

Technically any good? This movie is definitely slanted against the credit industry, though based on the facts it presents, I wonder how you could make a pro-credit industry docu without lying your ass off. Regardless, this film talks to both the prey and the predators involved in the credit industry and shows you how both sides function. Most disturbing is seeing how much money the predators can make and how they rationalize taking horrible advantage of people’s trust–or complete lack of intelligence–the film introduces us to one mentally handicapped man who was given a loan. Yep, there are people so corrupt that they will give a man almost incapable of signing his own name.

Needless to say, this film makes a powerful case for a serious reformation of the credit industry.

Final Rating? GSN – Go See Now – this film is something every American should watch. We are being preyed upon by this industry and it’s wrong.

Full disclosure time: I was illegally sued for back debt I didn’t owe and lost the case. The law is useless if you have a judge who won’t see that it is enforced and if you can’t afford a lawyer, that doesn’t help either.

So, I might be a little biased in my review of this film. Then again, I think it’s justified.

Watch it now!

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Sadly, no. While I can say that this remake of the 1972 original is a more entertaining film than the original, I can’t say it was entertaining.

Technically any good? The characters were vaguely drawn and nothing they did made me care about them one way or the other. The relationship Clooney’s character has with his wife is boring and unspecial and, as you watch, you wonder why they were together at all. FX-wise it was amazing–great space footage, but sadly, that’s all there is to like about this film. It is nice to see Clooney in a scifi setting, but that’s not enough to make this a scifi film worth seeing.

How did it leave me feeling? Disappointed. I used to be a fan of director Steven Soderbergh’s but after seeing this and The Limey I can’t help but wonder where the mind-bending stuff he did in Schizopolis went. Is Out of Sight even worth Netflixing?

Final Rating? DNS – Do Not See – I was really hoping for something mind-bending, but all I got was a very predictable (even if you haven’t seen the original) 99-minute episode of The Twilight Zone. The thing is, Rod Serling could have made this premise work really well in a 30-minute structure. A movie just seems a bit much for this premise. (SPOILER ALERT: If you’ve seen Forbidden Planet you’ve seen a more dynamic and entertaining interpretation of the premise of Solaris.)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Well, as a fan of cheesy movies, it was juuust barely a positive experience. Entertaining might be overstating it, however. More, amusing (at times).

Technically any good? Well, it was directed by Roger Corman, so that’s debatable. However, the movie did hint at the comic talents we’d see on display in Little Shop of Horrors, which was nice. The script is campy and silly and there’s not much else to say about the movie. The acting is hit and miss, though it doesn’t matter since this is one of Corman’s more campy creations.

How did it leave me feeling? I guess it left me feeling satisfied that I’d accidentally stumbled across a Corman film I’d never seen or heard anything about. It was pretty crappy over all and would only recommend it to Corman Completists and since I’m not one, myself, I can’t really recommend it–even to the MST fans in the audience.

Final Rating? DNS – Do Not See. This film will never (rightfully) see the moniker of “classic” Corman. It’s mildly amusing and that’s about it. I’d love to see it remade though–the premise of a guy getting rich off of a monster hoax that turns out to not be a hoax during the Cuban revolution is actually kind of interesting to me.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Terence Stamp is always fun to watch, even when I don’t like his choices, so, yeah, in a sense this movie was entertaining, though the whole thing falls a pretty flat.

Technically any good? The premise is simple enough, but the director manages to play around a bit too much with structure to the point where it’s downright distracting as hell. I found the script to be a bit wandering and virtually none of the characters to be likable or even resonant. I also felt that Stamp’s performance felt forced. I guess you could say I just didn’t care for this movie (DO YA THINK?). I suppose on a strictly technical level it holds together, but when an audience member doesn’t give a crap about the characters or the story, there must be something wrong with it on a technical level.

How did it leave me feeling? A big fat “meh.” I’d like to see this film remade as a gritty, noir thriller without the structural weirdness and with a more intricate mystery to solve. The Limey unfolds like the most boring origami ever.

Final Rating? DNS – Do Not See unless you’re just a huge fan of Stamp or Soderbergh. I thought I was both, but I’m starting to wonder about Soderbergh. Again, this movie was a big fat “meh” for me.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? I would say YES. However, it’s a very jarring, sometimes depressing film, so don’t expect it to be a “feel good” kind of movie.

Technically any good? While the CG animation was kind of weak, everything else about the documentary was awesome. The voice acting was solid (the late :( Roy Scheider puts in an impressive performance as the judge). Over all the film does a wonderful job of mixing historical footage, audio, animation (CG, traditional and Flash) to make a compelling documentary about a short, but important time period in American history. Some of the facts they present in this movie really made me mad.

How did it leave me feeling? Mad.

:)

It left me wondering why 20 century American history was entirely ignored in my history class. It seems like there’s a whole lot to learn from just the trial these people in Chicago went through.

Final Rating? GSN – GO SEE NOW – Netflix it, rent it, find it, watch it. This is HISTORY and it’s particularly topical these days.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? It was certainly entertaining, but once you go deeper than the surface, you realize that this film is all glitz and no guts.

Technically any good? The acting was generally solid (though Jodie Foster’s choices were strong but boring–aka she was an almost over-the-top, predictable mean person rather than a real character who happened to be unlikable). The film is shot beautifully–the music is good, but there’s too much of it. The most sad thing here, however, is the script. Spike Lee is a very good filmmaker so he makes you forget how nonsensical the script is. Sure, the film seems to hold together until you start thinking about how NOT perfect this supposedly perfect crime is. The fact of the matter is that the basic premise of the film falls apart the moment you begin to examine it.

Also, don’t expect any positive female characters in this film. You’re either an obedient sex pot, a bitch or a bland background character, if you’re a woman in this film.

How did it leave me feeling? Very “meh.” It was clearly trying to do some some sort of modern film noir, but it was just too complicated and messy to work as a noir (especially since it doesn’t really work as anything else–of course, that doesn’t stop it from being entertaining on a basic level).

Final Rating? DNS – Do Not See. It was a nice first attempt for Spike Lee to do a non-racially motivated/charged film, but with a better script, I think Lee’s capable of a much better movie. And ditch the “Spike Cam” (or as I like to call it now: “Segway Cam”) it just knocks you right out of the damn movie–like a sledge hammer it knocks you out of the movie.

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Not really–I suppose it was fine for a background movie, but the story was so cliche, even for its time.

Technically any good? It was reasonably acted, but this movie treads upon well traveled ground. Some of the makeup FX are good, but generally, this is just your standard “Jekyl and Hyde” story mixed in with a love triangle between a mad(ish) scientist, his dedicated (if amoral) assistant and a hot blonde. Some of the set pieces were nice. Sadly, even for a bad B-movie, the script was almost completely forgettable.

How did it leave me feeling? Meh. Like I said, this is just like a half-dozen other “J&H” stories that have been “borrowed” for scripts of other bad movies. I think MST3K did three or four of them (at least) with almost the exact same plot structure (LEACH WOMAN comes to mind the quickest).

Final Rating? DNS – Do Not See – unless you happen to be jonesing for a bad b-movie to quip to, MST3K-style, this movie isn’t worth bothering with.
