Guess who’s NOT going to be President in 2009?

GOP Colorado Rep Tom Tancredo isn’t, that’s who!

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo’s campaign stood by his assertion that bombing holy Muslim sites would serve as a good “deterrent” to prevent Islamic fundamentalists from attacking the United States, his spokeswoman said Friday.

“This shows that we mean business,” said Bay Buchanan, a senior Tancredo adviser. “There’s no more effective deterrent than that. But he is open-minded and willing to embrace other options. This is just a means to deter them from attacking us.”

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA someone just shot his own political future down into the dust. Unfortunately, this comment isn’t making a lot of waves in the public eye, what with gays soliciting for sex in airport restrooms and Britney being fat and untalented on stage. Come on get your priorities in check, people!

Full story can be found here.

And this is what I posted to the CNN comments section:

“Bombing and destroying religious lands in the Middle East would not only anger those in the Middle East, but would be a personal affront to anyone of the Muslim faith here in America. Tom Tancredo is sending a message of intolerant, religious hatred to those both overseas and to those belonging to the American Muslim community.

Actually, he’d be destroying everything we hold dear in America regarding religious tolerance and treating everyone of different faiths equally. Destroying Mecca and Medina would basically give dangerous precedence to others that it’s a legitimate form of political exchange and tactic to bomb Jerusalem, the Holy Mount, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Stonehenge, or any other site that holds religious or spiritual significance to other persons of faith.

And this is coming from an agnostic, not a person of any particular faith. And how is this going to help the future of mankind? What a stain on future history books – “Here’s the site that used to be Mecca, the most holy of Muslim sites, but America destroyed it in 2010 after Tom Tancredo was elected President.”

Let’s not let this “gentleman” from Colorado have any more years of service in the Representative body, please???”

Are U.S. Soldiers sacrosanct?

Just read this article about two artists, one in Texas, the other in Austin, who are fighting a Texas law just signed in by the governor which prohibits the use of the names of fallen soldiers for artistic, commercial (or otherwise) use without the soldier’s family’s permission. The artists are trying to get this law revoked on first amendment speech bases.

I feel that when one signs up with the US Army/Navy/Marines, you are putting yourself down on the roster of potential history makers. Once you enter a war and participate, this fact becomes even more a potential issue. You give yourself over as a public member of the US – a representative of the people of the US. Soldiers in war are part ambassador as well as protector or offensive warrior. By dying in the line of fire during a very public war (especially one which is reported on in newspapers across the globe), these soldiers instantly become a part of American History.

Second point, all history is open to everyone in the world for commentary, art, and other forms of communication and point of view work. To ask the families of fallen soldiers to give approval for their son’s or daughter’s names to be used is not treating them like the U.S. Soldiers they chose to be.

People may be objecting to the fact that these tshirts are being sold and profit may be made. One of the artists said he’d be donating part of the money he gets to “Children of Fallen Soldiers, a Web-based fund, and Mystical Oasis, a Texas nonprofit devoted to struggling artists.” I’m not sure if that helps, but it’s besides the point.

I believe that just as George Bush’s very public face can be plastered on anti-war tshirts without permission and sold as 1. a political, free-speech protected right and 2. a means of profit, so should the names of the US Soldiers be used.

As one of the artists said: “I think the outrage shouldn’t be focused on my drawing attention to their deaths but by the deception that caused their deaths.”

Thoughts?

SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007)

Positive Experience/Entertaining?Uhhhh no. Wait…there was that one moment with Sandman and Venom was cool towards the end…Oh! Bruce Campbell is funny! Besides that? Uhhh….eeee…..no. Most of it was embarrasing to watch, klunky choices all around, convoluted and had absolutely no pacing or understanding of the passage of time. Oh, and remember that cool villain in black that is on all the billboards and posters and trailers here in LA? He shows his ass very late in the movie, almost as a “oh yeah, he’s supposed to be somewhere in here.” And Mary Jane is bitchy as all getout.
Technically any good?Someone should give Hayden Church (Sandman) the award for “most simple acting job for a Sam Raimi movie”. While the character was two dimentionally written, his depiction of Sandman was the only one who touched me in any way, and the animators really captured his plight. Thought the Venom and Sandman CG was really well done, but the action sequences were frenetic…or maybe I’m becoming old and crotchity.
How did it leave me feeling?I want to sit Sam Raimi down and explain to him that sometimes scripts need to have a few more edits before being brought to set, and to concentrate more on reality when it comes to a Spiderman movie. Oh, and to tell him that putting obvious eyeliner on a character and mussing his hair is a very poor way to show that he’s become EVIL! EVIL I SAY!
Final Rating? DNS – or at best catch it on FX while you’re sitting on your couch at home, eating or making paper airplanes, or myspacing on your laptop. Then you can work while the dialogue is happening, mute it during the dance number, and look up just to watch the action sequences.

Soldier gets Criticism for admitting his actions are against his faith

Thanks to friend Lauren for finding this article.

Apparently, someone who is Christian…who follows the famous “Thou Shalt Not Kill” Commandment…is not supposed to ask forgiveness for the sin if he/she kills enemy combattants in military/battleground situations.

Sgt. Mathew Gonzalez put a decal on the back of his pickup truck, the rear window. He’s been driving around his local hometown of Bakersfield with it on to express his regret in breaking the 6th of the 10 Commandments. The decal, which features the silhouette of a kneeling soldier leaning on a gun with his head bowed, reads “Lord please forgive me, I have committed sins for our freedom”. Gonzalez believes that, as a Catholic, he is committing sin every time he goes out into the battlefields of Iraq and kills for his country.

So, he’s making a statment that basically points out how he’s battling the innate conflict between being a Catholic Christian and a Patriotic American. He’s bold enough to point out the hypocricy of a “Christian” America who glorifies killing for “freedom”. Bravo to him. But what do his local neighbors in Bakersfield do? Call up the local radio station and complain about him, saying the decal on the back of his truck, saying it is against the morale of the military.

In response to this issue, some veterans are saying that it’s no sin to kill people in battle. Hmmmm…I don’t remember the 10 Commandments saying “Thou Shalt Not Kill…Unless Thou Find Thyself on the Battlefield Fighting Thy Nation’s Enemies in the Name of Freedom…(or whatever Thy President sayest thou art fighting against, even though it’s based on total rot)”

Give this guy a fucking break and admit he has a point here!!! He’s basically being a very good Christian; he’s admitting and asking forgiveness for the conflict of faith in his God and faith in his Country. We can all find fault in his faith for either of them, but at least he’s being totally honest about it! I don’t personally believe in his God or the war that he’s putting himself in danger for, but I truly admire him for not letting either part of himself fall by the wayside.

Nutrition woes…

listen via talkr

So I’m trying to figure out how to lose weight and get my energies up. I go to a which gives you the ABC’s of strict no-nonsense eating and living. Here is the information, with my commentary. Enjoy

“Dietary Guidelines:

1. Eat whole, natural foods — this is obvious. But the very fact that a food is labeled “whole” and “natural” doesn’t mean that it is.

2. Eat only foods that will spoil, but eat them before they do — tell that to my bananas. OH, and my lettuce — they spoil before I eat them.

3. Eat naturally-raised meat including fish, seafood, poultry, beef, lamb, game, organ meats and eggs. — naturally-raised foods are really expensive.

4. Eat whole, naturally-produced milk products from pasture-fed cows, preferably raw and/or fermented, such as whole yogurt, cultured butter, whole cheeses and fresh and sour cream. Use only traditional fats and oils including butter and other animal fats, extra virgin olive oil, expeller expressed sesame and flax oil and the tropical oils—coconut and palm. – where do you find these things!??!? And, once again, the cost of buying these speciality items is so huge, no wonder many poor people have equally poor diets.

5. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, in salads and soups, or lightly steamed. Use whole grains and nuts that have been prepared by soaking, sprouting or sour leavening to neutralize phytic acid and other anti-nutrients. — hard to do this when eating out, unless you ask the chef to prepare it this way or eat it raw. Organic, sure that’s easy.

6. Include enzyme-enhanced lacto-fermented vegetables, fruits, beverages and condiments in your diet on a regular basis. — okay, where do you get these?

7. Prepare homemade meat stocks from the bones of chicken, beef, lamb or fish and use liberally in soups and sauces. — I can do this. But my home will eventually smell like a witch’s brew and my doorstop will be crowded by stray cats and dogs eager for a meal. Who knows how to make meat stock out there?

8. Use herb teas and coffee substitutes in moderation. — done, that’s easy.

9. Use filtered water for cooking and drinking. — Britta’s here to save the day!

10. Use unrefined Celtic seasalt and a variety of herbs and spices for food interest and appetite stimulation. — Celtic sea salt? So I can’t use my Kosher Jew-salt anymore?? Sheesh…

11. Make your own salad dressing using raw vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and expeller expressed flax oil. — that sounds dirty. Is balsamic “raw” vinegar?

12. Use natural sweeteners in moderation, such as raw honey, maple syrup, dehydrated cane sugar juice and stevia powder. — a must!!! Screw the sugar.

13. Use only unpasteurized wine or beer in strict moderation with meals. — how pretentious is that when ordering at a bar? “Yes, I’d like a Miller Light, but please make it unpasteurized.”

14. Cook only in stainless steel, cast iron, glass or good quality enamel. — wanna buy me some? I’m still using the crappy pots and pans our parents gave us.

Use only natural supplements.

15. Get plenty of sleep — ugh, big point for me! exercise — trying!!!!!and natural light. — ah there’s the rub. From 7 to 4, I’m usually at desk, on the computer. Sometimes I go out, but only to drive to the gym. So I may get about an hour of sunlight :(

16. Think positive thoughts — fuck you! and minimize stress. — well I’d like to. Trying to relax and let that which does not matter go.

17. Practice forgiveness. — I forgive myself for having trouble with this. I forgive the world for being so confusing. I forgive the junk food corporations, they’re trying to make a buck on stupidity and ignorance and temptation, I know, but we gotta forgive ‘em.

And I forgive you, for reading this…

A Day of “Who the ‘F’ Cares?!?!” in the News

by Siskita 9:00 am 2007-03-02
Categories | $ | Comments (0) »
listen via talkr

I get up this morning, and ThePete notices a couple of “news” items on DrudgeReport.com. He and I both have similar thoughts on politics, he a bit more indignantly than I. Apparently, there are a few things that are passing as news in the world, items of “interest” that really do not matter a hill of beans in this world. Here are a few of them:

1. “Prime Minister Tony Blair is a human with a youthful past” — Ok, that’s not the real headline. The real headline is “Young Blair’s obscene gesture”. Apparently, an old picture of Blair as a College student has been finally revealed in its entirety to the public. It used to be viewed cropped to only show a feathery-haired young Blair wearing an old fashioned “Barbershop”-style hat. Now you can see him holding his hand in an “obscene” gesture as if he is jerking himself off.

This is just an interesting thing…not something to get all hyped up about. It is totally irrelevant what our politicians did in the past (unless they killed someone or committed fraud or theft). It’s what they DO in the time they are in office which really matters. Even if they say something seemingly hypocritical while they are in office (”I’m against drugs even though I smoked weed in College”), we can’t hold past things for or against them. Anyway, we can just enjoy the picture for what it was and learn a little more about his past, but not hold it for or against Blair or give it a reason for what he has or hasn’t done.

Oh, and for those who think Bush is free from a past like this, watch this video of himself, a grown man out of College, making a very pointed obscene gesture at the camera while he was Governor of Texas. And I have many, MANY more objections to things he’s done IN the office of the President that is the real news of the day.

2. “Our Ancestors Didn’t Have the Same Morals Regarding Slavery As We Do Now!!!!” — this must be obvious to all of us, yet the Baltimore Sun felt it was important to point out that “a new twist” to Barac Obama’s “intriguing family history” has arisen : ancestors on his mother’s side owned slaves. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO KNOW???? WHY IS THIS A TWIST???? WHO CARES???? There’s a 99% chance that I have Portuguese/Spanish ancestors who tortured Jews into becoming Christian during the Inquisition, yet that has no true relevance on how I am as a person.

Now, the article goes on to say that “The report, on Reitwiesner’s Web site, carries a disclaimer that it is a “first draft” – one likely to be examined more closely if Obama is nominated” and that this information “could add a new dimension to questions by some who have asked whether Obama…is attuned to the struggles of American blacks descended from West African slaves.”

I would say that this is an interesting way of looking at someone, but not the be-all and end-all of why someone should or should not vote for him as a potential leader of the nation. It may be an interesting topic of conversation, but said conversation should only realistically last about 10 minutes, in my opinion. But then again, I’m not black and don’t have the smidgen of a connection to black slaves besides an “aw shucks, parts of our past as Americans suck and I’m glad that slavery no longer exists” opinion of history.

Then again, I caught Al Sharpton on The Daily Show last night. It was revealed that his slave ancestors (his great-grandfather) were owned by ancestors of Strom Thurmond (past segregationist/Presidential candidate/Dick Tracy villain). Sharpton reacted to this by saying that the best moral or thing to take away with this revelation was that slavery is not an “ancient” practice in America’s deep past, but something that is only three generations away. Jon Stewart agreed, saying “hey, I even knew my great-grandfather, the father to my grandfather”. Sharpton then basically said that this information only gives some credence to the amount of progression black Americans have experienced; within 140 years, they have gone from things to 3/5 of people to separate but equal, disenfranchised citizens to full citizens with some racial/socioeconomic problems still to iron out. And finally, a 1/2 black and 1/2 white man whose mother’s ancestors could have been cotton-picking, slave-owning neighbors with Strom Thurmond, is in a good spot in the race for President. It’s inspirational!

Hmmm…maybe I should retract my “really do not matter a hill of beans in this world” stance now…

1st Lt. Ehren Watada — Judge won’t hear why he’s staying out of Iraq

by Siskita 11:50 am 2007-02-06
Categories | $ | Comments (1) »
listen via talkr

According to the Nuremburg Principles, which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (and the United States) in 1950, soldiers and heads of state can be liable for “crimes against peace”, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. A key phrase reads: “The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relive him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him.”

Sooooooo…this brings us to 1st Lt. Ehren Watada, 28, of Honolulu, who has refused to serve in the military in the Iraq war, which he believes is an ”illegal war” founded on ”lies.” He has acted upon the moral choice possible in front of him to not fight in the war.

So what does the military judge in his trial (military judge Lt. Col. John Head) do? He basically says that the defense team “could not debate the legality of the Iraq war in court.” According to an article by the Associated Press, Lt. Col John Head says that ” ‘whether the war is lawful’ is a political question that could not be judged in a military court.”

I’m poisoned by my boss with an apple pie. I take him to court to say “hey, this guy poisoned me with this pie…see, it’s poisoned…you can test it for arsenic.” And the judge says “you can not bring up the subject of apple pie in this court hearing, it’s up to someone else to decide whether apple pie is a viable subject.” That’s basically what this judge is saying.

Quoting the NY Times: “Army prosecutors have argued that Watada’s behavior was dangerous to the mission and morale of soldiers in Iraq.” Again, the stupid argument that an action against the government would “embolden” the terrorists or “discourage” the soldiers. WHAT ABOUT THE TRUTH?!?!?! I would rather I know that I’m working for a mob boss than be “demoralized”. Hell, the truth allows people, soldiers and civilians, to make their own decisions. And if the war itself is proven to be illegal in the eyes of International Law, then current soldiers have the right to either stay in the war and risk becoming a part of an international crime, or choose to follow 1st Lt. Ehren Watada.

I’m a true believer in completing what one promises to do, as long as the promise is made on clear, straightforward, legal boundaries. That is what soldiers are supposed to do: follow commands from his Commander-In-Chief and other superiors which falls under legal (U.S. and U.S.-agreed International) law.

If a war IS illegal, then 1st Lt. Watada has a case. But not hearing the evidence put forth by his defense attorneys is a breach of having a fair trial.

Grrrr! /end of line

School Bans Talking During Lunch…for Student’s Safety…sort of

by Siskita 10:10 am 2007-01-26

So a Catholic school in Rhode Island decides to ban talking during lunch after, as this article reports, “three recent choking incidents in the school cafeteria.” According to the principal of Saint Rose , Jeannine N. Fuller, “the school’s priority is the safety of each child.”

I went to Catholic school, nothing against them in principal. But God himself would look down on this school and say “WTF?” They’re more likely to die on the drive on the way to school than choke. If anything, they should take the time to teach kids how to chew properly and how to practice the Heimlich Maneuver instead. Teach them to DO something, don’t stop them FROM DOING something (ie, talking).

I felt compelled to write an email to the principal and to the school in general. This email encapsulates my thoughts on the matter. If you want to email them directly yourself, go to their website.

Anyway, here’s the email:

“Dear Principal Jeannine N. Fuller, Saint Rose School,

by now you may have had multiple emails regarding your choice to ban
talking during lunch hours because of a hazard of “choking” within the
student body.

You might as well ban walking while chewing gum, dancing while in high
heels, driving in a car to get to school, wearing neckscarves, chewing
on pencils, wearing glasses, growing long hair and putting them in
ponytails, and riding bicycles — all of these activities put children
in danger (choking, tripping and falling, car crash, being hung,
swallowing erasers, getting hit in face and being cut, hair pulling,
falling and scraping knees, respectively).

You might as well start feeding the children intravenously. Besides
the inconvenient pin prick of the needle, this is the only way to
protect the children from being human.

Please stop this policy and let the children have the socialization
experience necessary to grow up in this world. Lunch is a time to
express thoughts, communicate with others, and learn essential
cultural and behavioral skills necessary to grow up in this world.
Don’t take it away.

Concerned citizen,

S”

Sorry, Joan of Arc lovers, you’re praying to a cat

by Siskita 12:15 pm 2006-12-28

Now, I’ve got a hero worshipping streak in me, and I’m very sentimental about certain objects that hold particular personal meaning to me. I teared up when I saw one of the few remaining pairs of Judy Garland’s ruby slippers at the Smithsonian. I can still go back to my scrapbook at home and see a pair of false eyelashes glued to a page, the ones I wore opening night when I played Dolly in “Hello, Dolly!” in high school. I enjoy going to historic buildings and standing where kings and queens once lived. Seeing an actual object or standing in a real place gives you a certain connection or perspective on the meaning behind an event.

The one thing I don’t understand is the worship of relics that have no true historically-backed truth to them. Shards of the “True Cross,” bones of saints, fingernail clippings of Angelina Jolie (well, at least those can be DNA tested?). Anyway, most people who are believers of a certain faith will harbor or hold sacred a relic for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years. And they do so on faith or word-of-mouth alone. A beggar man walks into a village with a mysterious collections of fragmented bones in a tiny bag and tells them they’re bones from Saint Ethel. The villagers raise a huge church in Ethel’s honor, hire the beggar man as chief overseer of the relic, he dies fat and happy, and in 1000 years there’s even a gift shop clumsily parked next to the church with “I saw Saint Ethel!” tshirts printed on them.

So, I read that it turns out that one particular collection of relics, those supposedly of the bones of Saint Joan of Arc, include a cat femur, and that the rib bone and piece of cloth supposedly collected from Joan’s funeral pyre contain embalming fluid and blackened dye to make it look scortched. Now, I’m not saying that the relic don’t contain actual parts of Joan mixed in with the cat, but chances are the relic is a hoax.

Here’s the deal. This is not to say that Joan wasn’t the Saint she is so revered as. It is not to say that she is not worth worshipping or honored. She was a bit insane in my opinion, but had a modern sensibility about her and could have kicked ass in the 21st century. However, this is a perfect example of how humans should never take any information, especially when it is by word-of-mouth and undocumented, for granted. People spend thousands of dollars traveling to holy lands, relicaries (sp?), and other places where relics and “holy spots” lie just to be close to what they believe is connected to their faith. I guess they’d rather be safe then sorry when it comes to visiting something that they truly believe in. They’d rather believe it’s true or they might lose out on the chance to actually be close to something connected with God.

I just hope they don’t get snookered into spending money in the Joan of Arc giftshop under false pretences. And if there is a Joan of Arc giftshop, can anyone buy me a shirt that says “I got burned at the stake and all that God got me was this lousy tshirt”?

I believe that faith should be enough. If you believe in Joan of Arc, you shouldn’t have to go and be near her bones to feel more worthy of her praise. Then again, I didn’t NEED to go to see Judy’s slippers in order to love her work. It was just fun to do, and I got to see many other pop culture, space, and historic pieces of art up close and personal at the same time. But I know that they’re real and that they connect to something I saw and heard

…or do I? Maybe those slippers are fakes and I don’t know it! Perhaps in 1000 years humans will look back on Judy’s slippers and say “wow, Saint Judy wore those? And be snookered into purchasing hologramatic replica slipper-shoes to wear at the next “Wizard of Oz” worshipping ritual. Bring the holy Scarecrow scroll too.

DREAMGIRLS (2006)

listen via talkr

Positive Experience/Entertaining? With great voices, powerhouse acting, non-stop music (or at least it felt like it), Dreamgirls is a very positive and invigorating experience. As a singer, and as one who feels like Effie every once in a while, I had a very visceral reaction to the story and her plight. But the movie grabs the audience’s eyes and ears and doesn’t let go. The cast is rock-solid for the most part and extremely well cast.
Technically any good? Praise to the editing and the costume/makeup/hair designers – they all went overtime on this. Although some of the score arrangements leaned more towards the modern pop mentality, the music was well done. I can’t say how well it adhered to the original, expecially since it had 4 new songs inserted into the mix. These extra songs made it stuffed with a bit more music than one is used to, but I love music so I won’t mind listening. And the choreography is brilliant, perfect for both the time period and the screen.
How did it leave me feeling? Like singing! I think watching this movie made me toss and turn that night, I didn’t want to go to bed after!

What to tell your parents this holiday season

listen via talkr

Sierra glamour shotSince many of my friends connected through MySpace are artists, actors, musicians, I’d like to give a little advice to them.

“Struggling” “Starving” “Hopeful”

If ever you hear one of your darling, dear, well-meaning parents or other relative use one of the terms above to describe you, as in “Oh, my Johnny is a ’starving actor’ down there in Los Angeles” — take action. Nip it in the bud right now and take that lovely family member aside. Tell them it does you no help to have any augmenting adjective in front of your professional description. You are an actor, writer, singer, painter, musician, welder, whatever. Done. Period.

No need to add a disparaging word. We know that there are a limited number of roles for a large number of talented people. We know that only a fraction of those roles are paid, and that the big movie and television roles are coveted.

But it’s about being proud of your work as an artist. About knowing that your work is good, that you deserve to be seen, that you have an individual voice which can offer up a new way of seeing the world and of what human nature is. We can be proud of our work whether we are performing in a coffee shop, 99 seat theater, concert hall, or if our work is seen on a screen. Strive for the large dream, of course, but remember that we climb the ladder by accomplishing many great things on the way up, and affecting many people along the vertical climb.

So if Aunt Ethel introduces you to her friend as “Johnny, the Struggling Artist”, break in with “actually, I just did a very sucessful run at the Matrix Theater this past month, so I wouldn’t consider myself struggling at all.”

Indeed, you’re not struggling when you are doing what you love to do. Most people choose to put their dreams aside and work at their job just to make money, follow their parents wishes or those strung up by society over the years. These people may not “struggling” in a monetary sense, but they may be struggling with their dreams, or the lack of trying to accomplish them each and every day.

In 2007, make a vow to yourself. Wether you’ve accomplished your dream or are still on the road towards it, make it a plan each day to do something, anything, that will take you closer to the next step. I temp during the day, but when I can I read a play, do online submissions, call a friend who may be a good source of support or may have a contact for me. Those actions add up. Push forward this year and get that dream out of your head and into reality.

The only struggle is when you don’t do something about it.

Love you all,

Si

THE GOOD GERMAN (2006)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Very much so. While impatience will stop some audience members from enjoying this movie, I thought it an interesting experiement and very entertaining work. Director Soderburgh creates a movie that feels like it was made in the 1940’s but made with modern sensibilities. Thus, the people behave, speak, and act like they must have (swearing, sex, murder, violence), but all captured on beautiful black and white. The pace is even, the story clear and understandable. But, like I said, without huge explosions today’s audience may not think it’s very thrilling.
Technically any good? The black and white photography is lovely, with film noir lighting and great costumes. It really adheres to the sensibilities of the time, so while there are no huge camera cuts, zooms, or special effects, it still kept my attention.
How did it leave me feeling? Satisfied. While not the perfect movie, it still was worth seeing and worth making in this day and age of colorized, CG-effect-laden movies.

OH MY GOD JOHN LENNON WAS A…hippie?

Yesterday morning I heard on the radio and read this news article that the FBI finally let go of 10 documents (or 300 pages) of previously unreleased data on former Beatle John Lennon and allowed them to be revealed to the public finally. These pages were held away from the public eye due to the FBI’s assertion that the information was classified. They said they had reason to fear that the information held may cause retaliation against America by the MI5.

The information? That Lennon was thinking of opening a peacenick bookstore and reading room in London, that he was arrested of marijuana posession, played around with illicit drugs, and that he harbored left-wing sympathies and sometimes gave money to them.

Whee.

This overabundance of hysteria through the ages has got to stop. On CNN this morning there was a newscast about how strollers and some baggage isn’t being scanned on the way into an airplane. OK, I understand that security is important, but in the great scheme of things there is still more probability that I will be killed driving home from work (all 15 minutes of bumper to bumper traffic) than crashing down during my flight to North Carolina next week due to a bomb or terrorist attack. I mean, now babies are being stupidly placed into X-Ray machines. Okay, that last point was slightly off topic, but there may be a connection. The baby could have been packin’.

If America’s foundation of freedom, justice, liberty and the tenants of democracy is strong enough, we citizens shouldn’t fear left-wing, long-haired, scrubby, bed-sleeping-in-for-peace musicians, even those as powerful and as British as John Lennon was.

Let’s learn from our superior’s idiocy, and grow up and out of it.

IDIOCRACY (2006)

Positive Experience/Entertaining? Oh man is it ever!

Technically any good? While the special effects were uneven, the storytelling is brisk and the editing keeps it moving. The acting is spot-on: Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, and Dax Shepard make simple choices and refrain from bogging the story down. Other character actors go the whole nine yards and put their heart and soul into being brainless. Real but over-the-top.

How did it leave me feeling? Okay, here we go: Having just seen a midnight showing of the movie here in Los Angeles (thanks Santa Monica Nuart Theater!) I must say that this will go down in the history books as one of the most interesting, unique, inventive and funny movies of the decades. SHAME ON 20TH CENTURY FOX for not taking the time to advertise and distribute it!!!

But I can understand why they wouldn’t distribute it – the movie takes an unquestioning jab at everything FOX and channels like FOX NEWS stands for. Mike Judge takes a truly satirical look at the future of humankind- a “what if” of extraordinary proportions in which the idiots of the world outpopulate those with higher IQ’s. The corporate mentality, melded with assembly-line automation technology, create a world in which stupidity is basically tube-fed to survive. They’re basically left to their own to do mindless work and then sit at home watching T.V. Sounds familiar? Or do you think that’s a strange premise? Can’t visualize it? Mike Judge made it happen in a wonderfully inventive and frightening way.

The social commentary is incredibly witty and hilarious. Those who actually watch for the details will be stunned by the intelligent nuances mixed in with the “dumb” humor. But even the “dumb” humor is made specifically to comment on our own seeming fascination with fart humor, sex, and jackass entertainment. I don’t quite understand some reviews that call the jokes “bathroom” humor. They don’t get it.

This will soon become a cult classic, under-the-radar fare. I was laughing hysterically at this movie. I wanted them to hit rewind so I could watch it again then and there. It’s coming out on DVD early January, and I’m excited to get it, buy it for my family (all stupid and intelligent members), and hold a screening to introduce it to those who never heard of it or who didn’t get to see it in theaters (ONCE AGAIN SHAME ON YOU 20th CENTURY!!!).

“Welcome to CostCo. I Love You.”

Final Rating? GSN – any way you can!

And here’s a great latimes.com article by Pat Morrison about it!

Anti-Smoking Hero dies himself of cancer of the lungs

Oh the irony/sad coincidence/proof that God has a wicked sense of humor.

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6194670.stm

You’d think that this story would cause everyone who smokes to throw away their packs and start breathing healthily again. But sadly probably not…

Allen Carr championed at least 10 million people to quit smoking and lead healthier lives. He quit 23 years ago and stlll died of the disease. Probably increased his lifespan, since he did die at the age of 72.

I hope all those who are reading this who still smoke will take a look at Allen Carr’s life and their own and see what’s worth keeping – a habit or your life?

Vote in Miss Horrorfest 2006 for Black Betty

I’d like to point out an interesting battle that’s taking place through YouTube, that of the competition for the title of Miss Horrorfest. It’s in conjunction with the 8 Films to Die For campaign, which is part of a November Horror film festival going on throughout the nation.

My friend, Jessica, is vying for the role of Miss Horrorfest. She’s created a sophisticated and funny character called Black Betty, a sexy combination of Betty Paige and Elvira. Up against the other three competitors, she’s got the most confidence, class, acting chops, and humor. A perfect combination for Miss Horrorfest.

Obviously you make the call regarding the vote, but if you agree with me then signup for YouTube and go to www.youtube.com/profile?user=msblackbetty. View her videos (Episode #’s 3, 7, and her audition tape) and rate her high by clicking on the far right star underneath each video.

The others are all right, but they’re shrinking violets next to her. Or, they’re trying too hard by showing off other…uh…assets that they have besides talent. Jessica/Miss Black Betty is a great package of everything, and she’s made a character that can last. And with her pipes, she makes a classic scream queen.

Vote now!!!

Hello ThePete.com readers!

To fulfill a dream of mine, I’ve conspired with a fellow music lover, Matt DeMars, to create a vocalist/piano duo to run the route of nightclubs, restaurants, bars, hotel lobbies and cabarets in the Los Angeles area.

the myspace.com page? of course, I had to create one:

myspace.com/demarsandrein

Check it out and add it as a friend! We’re in the developmental stages, just cut a quick demo with the help of my friend (johntorres.com) took publicity stills with an up an coming photographer (headshotsbydavid.com) and are beginning the pitching stage by throwing our portfolio out to venues. If you have a connection, contact, or personal recommendation to an owner, manager or producer of a venue interested in dinner cabaret, bar or lounge entertainment, or party event shows, let us know!

Thanks! Live show events and dates to be announced on the demarsandrein blog system if you subscribe to it.
